small mic for fs700

For handheld work I try to cobble together a small microphone. it's sound qualities should ne just enough to use the audio as sync to external recorders. I am trying to get a small micW microphone to work with the xlr, but I failed soldering an adapter from 4pin 3,5mm plug to xlr.
another try was a small no name lavalier mic with the rode 3,5mm/xlr adapter, no success either.

I need something which dosen't stick out of the camera, the supplied mic is way to large, as is the rode video mic pro, which I use with my dslrs

any suggestions?

You need to bear in mind that XLR and 3.5mm aren't just physically different, they're electrically different too -- XLR is balanced, 3.5 is unbalanced. So a simple adapter won't work. Also phantom power, which your XLR socket provides, is 48v, which is way too much for a 3.5mm mic -- even if it takes plug-in power, that's a much lower voltage. (3v?) Basically 3.5 and XLR don't mix, at least not easily.

EDIT: to clarify, by "simple adapter", I mean one where you just solder the wires together. Some commercial adapters incorporate electronics (i.e. a balun) to adapt the connection; but I've seen seriously mixed reviews of those.

I don't know if it would be sensitive enough for even reference audio, but I guess you could try a cheap XLR lav -- like this:

I seriously feel your pain. Lots of times I just want reference sound and the included Mic is just way too large, especially for run and gun situations where you want to work light and minimal. I really wish the FS700 had an internal mic.

Here's my plan. I saw this Rodes XLR to 3.5mm adapater

Then you can plug in a 3.5mm mic (there are lots of small ones), or at least you should be able to. Attucus mentioned the power issue, but since this is specifically a 3.5mm to XLR adapter, I'm sure they took the power issues into consideration.

jetswing, that looks like a mini-XLR to XLR adapter -- I think it's specifically for lavs with mini-XLR plugs. Doesn't look like it'll work with a 3.5mm.
