Not a trailer.... just a quick scene. Another shot to be cut in to final for this small sequence. Any thoughts on CC? I have done to my preference but just interested in thoughts.

Shot on: DVX100A with anamorphic adapter
Edited on: ppro 1.5
Sound: unedited
Sorry about file size... 48.5mb
Exterior : Handheld
Interior: Dolly

Sorry dialogue in Japanese. The arriving gangster says he is the postie....

ncje, nice scene.

I liked the colours of the first few shots. Slightly over exposed but I liked the look. When you jump to the reverse (inside as gangster enters) the color temp changes and was a bit distracting for me. I'd like to see you match the tones a bit as I felt it jumped too much from the blue daylight tones to a red-yellow.

Many people would not have a problem with this but I am very picky.

nice work.

where'd you shoot this?

Toward the end of the clip the glass door in the backround looks a little over exposed. Your colors look good though! Nice job

Thanks for the input! Im really going for a warm interior cold exterior look, that said I dont want people to be too pulled away, Ill soften the interior colours. A lot of what I have shot outside is a little over exposed by choice. Still got a lot of work to do

This is shot in Tokyo.

Why is that important?

Color temp is usually a thematic element. I think it works fine here. The Hitman/thug entering from a "cold" environment invading someones home, a place of safety(i.e. "warmth")

There should a better argument for your critique than "uhh...they don't match". Maybe they're not supposed to. Say, what a novel idea! An idea filmakers have been using since the invention of color film stock.

Tibby, you have a decent point. If ncje wanted that large of a difference in color, as a choice, by all means- he's welcome to do it.

However, ncje was asking for thoughts, so I offered my opinion. And to be honest, I think I offered it constructively.

I thought the scene was nice. I do however, stand by my original opinion that the color jumped too much. For me, this was a distraction.

If you read my entire post you would have noticed that I offered the caveat that this was a point that I am picky about and that many would not have the same opinion.

In answer to your question of why I think this is important. Well, the most important reason is that when something distracts the viewers attention away from the story and points to the machinery behind the lense, you are working against yourself. At least this is true in most cases of narrative story telling.

I believe that jumps in color can aid in telling story, adding to mood, tone and style but I didn't feel that was the case here.

Your opinion is different. It is a subjective medium. I guess that's why ncje was asking for thoughts- to hear different ones.

Lastly, I was at no point trying to offer a "critique" to ncje's clip, as you said. It was my understanding that this was a work in progress and ncje was looking for feedback. I assumed that was what he was asking for when he requested "thoughts". My comments were offered in the spirit of helpfullness and Camaraderie.

So please cool your jets, tibby.

Ncje, Tokyo is amazing. You are very lucky to be living there. I visited last year. I loved it. If I was rich I'd move there.

Anxious to see more clips, tokyo has amazing looking locations.

You must be distracted a lot then. I see the same exact thing happening in movies and television all the time. It seems to have distracted you, I'm willing to bet it wasn't that distracting for others.

Opinions are a dime a dozen. I was merely offering mine in regards to yours.

ncje,

The only REAL critique I would have regarding this piece would be when the woman is hit with the gun. It's an obvious fake, which could easily be remedied by using a different angle or cutaway.

Keep up the good work ncje. You seem to have a natural eye for filmaking.

I think the clip looks good, but the transition did the same for me as it did with rook... Personal preference and artistic choice I understand, but I really stood out to me... Have you thought about following behind the gangster as he forces the guy back into his house? if you did that maybe we would see the transition from cold to warm, and perhaps it wouldn't be so abrupt. (just a thought)... and the strike on the women does look fake, so I would make sure I addressed that as well...

I agree the hit looked a bit staged but a subtle sound effect may do the trick.

Or as, tibby said place a cut on the hit, if you have the footage.

Ill have to go with sound as I dont have a cut shot on that one small sequence, although I do have 4 other takes, see what ends up in the bin. Im going for some additional cc on the switch between interior and exterior. I want the colour variance but Ill go for something a little more subtle in the final round up. I dont really want to use the follow show as I found the dolly shot on the interior looks much better.

Sorry wanted to add: Did anyone notice the little grey book on the table in the second part of the sequence? Recognise it?

Now this is what a DVX is meant for! Good work....you got any clips with DOF using that anamorphic lens? Can't wait to see more.
