On my single 1.8Ghz G5 running 10.4.11, with 3GB of RAM I have been experiencing an embarrassing choppiness when attempting to view HD content in either Quicktime (7.4.5) or FCP (5.1.4). This happens both with trailers I download from Apple and with HD footage I upload from my HVX200A. I did not have this problem before - it appeared to get worse over time and (perhaps naively) believing that a new video card would help, I upgraded to the Radeon 9600 Pro. However, not only did that not help, but resolution on my 2nd monitor declined drastically upon installation (there was no apparent improvement in graphics or gameplay with the new card despite it's being universally lauded).

How did a system that once played HD content so well go so terribly wrong and how do I get my HD life back on track?

h.264 trailers are computational intensive.

As to the DVCProHD footage, what are you playing them off, and what frame size and frame rate?

Neither 720 nor 1080 at any frame rate from my camera play back anything well in either Quicktime or FCP. I should also state that this wasn't a sudden change that coincided with my changing video cards. It appeared, at least anecdotally, to get worsen along a fairly linear progression before, during and after the card swap. It's almost as if my computer were suffering a gradual obsolescence.

Let me simplify the question for the moment. Should a single 1.8 G5 with 3GB of RAM and the Radeon 9600 be able to handle HD footage?

Wow..stumped the board! I wouldn't have thought I was the only person who has had this problem..go figure.

Again, what are the clips being played off?

What media drive with what specs?

Before you can claim a stump, you need to provide the info.

Nevermind but thanks anyway. DVXuser was probably the wrong place to ask this type of question. I reckon I'll try an Apple forum.

thx
