hi. i'm extremely, extremely new to the whole world of the digital video, editing and the dvx. i'm so glad i came across this site, i have learned so much from everyones posts. dvxuser.com is an incredible resource. this weekend i started shooting a music video for a friend of mine. here are a couple grabs of the footage. any criticism or suggestions are greatly appreciated (i need all the help i can get!).

I shot these in 24p mode (f5) and plan to edit in Vegas.

I havnt edited or color corrected at all. these are straight from the camera. any tips on how to make it more film-like?

Did you shoot advance 24p or regular if you have vegas do add a filmic look once or twice a little noise and grain it will look good. After color correction.

Re: "Slower Sound" Music Video Grabs

I'd consider adjusting the Brightness/Contrast Ratio; you can let that window blow out more of you want but I pay special attention to the white chart and the mans sleeves in the foreground.

After that, I'd adjust the coloring

another quick an easy solution is to use magic bullet. But prepare for the long render times.

Oh, welcome to the board. ;D

Re: "Slower Sound" Music Video Grabs

artistiam - i shot in 24p regular. what would be the difference if i shot in advanced? what is the difference between the two? from what i understand its for editing purposes, but i could totally be wrong. thanks for the suffestion for the filmic look, ill give it a shot.

John Hudson - thanks, i'll give that a try too. should i follow any steps that are involved when adjusting for brightness/contrast or sould i just eyball it?

BLUESPIDER - thanks! ive learned so much from this board already. ive heard magic bullet thrown around several times in the forums but i don't really have the budget for it. however, i did see that a vegas version of magic bullet-esqe filters may be available soon. i'll probably look in to that.

i also noticed in the forums that everyone states that color correction is subjective. i agree, but i am curious to hear what everyones first steps are when color correcting.

I would definatley use the 'Videoscopes' in your NLE for starters. Pay special attention to these. You already appear to have some nicely exposed shots here (comps are nice too). Stay below 100 and under 7.5

Are there any special looks you are after? If using Vegas check the Vegas thread for

CELLULOID and VASST; it might be a sweet shortcut to the overall look you are after in terms of CC

Re: "Slower Sound" Music Video Grabs

John- im going for the "doesnt look amature" look haha

ill run a search for CELLULOID and VASST and see what comes up.

do you know of any place that has a good explanation of the videoscopes?

Re: "Slower Sound" Music Video Grabs

You could try a desperat filter throw approach, to make it look "edgier". Still, sometimes a flat shot is just that.

But it's all good. We have to start somewhere... I just didn't get your aspect ratio. What are those cropping bars at the sides?

Anyway, how's that for the regular desperate filter throw?

Cheers!

Re: "Slower Sound" Music Video Grabs

thanks for the suggestion taubkin! That looks really good!

the aspect ratio is out of whack.. i added some black bars so it didnt distort when i uploaded it to the dvxuser screen grab thingie.

Besides magic bullet how would you go about getting a look like that? ive been tooling around in vegas but have yet to even come close to matching that.

Re: "Slower Sound" Music Video Grabs

A hard-core session on Magic Bullet would help here!

That was no magic bullet, just some playing around with photoshop filters and layer blending modes, all what you can do in your own NLE of choice.

the glow, was a duplicated layer on top of it, with gaussian blur, set to screen mode and with opacity between 50-70%. the rest is just curves, color balance and desaturation. I did not save the psd, i did that in a hurry, just playing around... Give it a try, I'm sure you'll learn a lot of tricks by playing around like this...

BTW - The artifacts were consequence of JPG compression, they would not show up using the regular footage...

Re: "Slower Sound" Music Video Grabs

That is VERY impressive taubkin. Can you please take all my footage and make it look that pretty. Wow!
