GH5 Slow week - How 'bout Panny G9 4K 60p C-AF@ ISO 10,000

A stress test of hi-ISO and C-AF performance: P-L 12-35mm/2.8v.1, @ ISO 10,000, f/2.8, 35mm FL, 1/30 sec. w/single, centered mod. large box focus area. 4K 60p conformed to 30p timeline, no color grading, NR, or sharpening. Standard "style" (no offsets), but +2/-2 S/H curve, AWB. Panning in my cluttered studio from about 2' to 20'. Lighting with 3 spots in ceiling, much dimmed so that darker corners barely visible,

The C-AF response was very good, smooth, only rare 3-step dance in these challenging conditions. But I was really blown away with color accuracy, contrast, and lack of image smudging - even in shadows. The noise quite fine-grained, and devoid of macro-blocking in shadows at this ISO. An this, even looking several feet away from my 43" 4K 60p monitor at the OOC clips, was impressive. The black level is extraordinary, and reaches a true 0,0,0 RGB in deepest shadows such as between the lid and body of the V700 scanner - tried to attach frame grab but failed.

Now the downside of the G9 is that 4K60p clips are limited to 10min., and 30p to 30min. And no C4K or log features, but CineD/V. Also, nice un-cropped 1080-180p for either 60 or 48p playback

peter-

for me the biggest limitation on the g9 has been about only 8-bit recording both internally AND externally which is the real bummer!

other than that concern, i very much like the handling, the ergos and the image quality.

thumbs up.

So far in my basically R&G productions I haven't seen the need for extended DR and the heavy grading needed in log. I do use my GH5 for performance videos needing long run times, with G9 for B-cam close shots w/ P-L 35-100.
