Slow Speed Music Video

Hi All,

Would really appreciate it if anyone could help me with this.

A couple of weeks ago we shot a music video on the HVX200 and used the VFR function to try and get that overcranked slowed down effect with the band.

We sped up the track by the recommended amounts we found on the threads about this and then had the band perform to the fast track. We shot in 25pn and at 32fps.

When it comes to resyncing all this back up in fcp with the original track it wont sync well at all. You can get a small phrase from the singer or a couple of beats from the drummer in sync but then it starts to really drift out again. Have we really done something wrong or am I missing a step in post? Even if the news is terrible it would be great to know so we don't make the same mistakes again!

Thanks

Stu

Try to do the following:
Go back to your original audio file that you used to do the filming, try to remember what was the speed percentage you applied to the file (10% faster, 100% faster)?
I am assuming you did this on FCP.
Than try to reverse this process by selecting one of your clip (hopefully a master, from the beginning of song until the end) then decrees the speed with the equal amount your apply to make the audio file faster, like (-10% or -100%) if I am not mistaken this should take care of the problem. In the worse case scenario this should allow you to get a better sync with the video footage, assuming you apply the same amounts you applied to the master clip. Hopefully this will help you.
Good luck.

Thanks for your help.

We sped up the audio following the formula set out in Barry's article like so.

32 fps: make song last 0.778x as long as normal; play it at 128.56% speed

The sound engineer did it in logic I think and we all took a turn at the maths regarding song length and came to the same conclusion so figure our sums regarding time were ok. I just dont understand why its doing this weird thing with going out of sync, unless of course this is just a 'real world' problem?

MarioDelC, forgive me for being dumb but are you suggesting this will speed up the video so its almost back to normal speed to match the normal speed song? Which I guess would at least allow us to do something the video at this point. Our only other alternative I see at this point would be to 'creatively' cut the video very quickly and re-sync each clip so it holds for a short period.

Thanks again for your help.
