Slow Motion

I'm shooting a short film in 4:3 24P Advanced on a DVX and there are numerous shots in slow motion. What method of shooting for these shots will yield the best results if they are to be slowed down on a 23.98 timeline in FCP? Are there specific percentages of speed that I should adhere to? Andrew

60i - you will lose half vertical resolution but the slow motion is quite good all things considered. They can easily be mixed on a timeline in Vegas, however, I know FCP is really picky about that kind of stuff. But then again FCP is a whore.

Hope this helps

is the resolution gap that that creates going to be a noticeable difference when i cut back and forth between 24p and 60i footage?

Yes, there is a significant resolution gap. However, there's a noticeable difference between full-speed and slow-motion shots anyway, so either way there's going to be a noticeable difference.

60i gives you the smoothest slow motion. 30p, played at half speed, would give you the same vertical resolution but more stuttery playback for your slow motion shots. So you should experiment and see which you prefer. If you need the resolution, and can sacrifice smoothness, go for 30p. If you need smoothness, at the expense of resolution, use 60i and slow it down.
