Slow Motion

I am filming a short film next week and I need to have a 2minute clip to be all in slow motion. I just got Vegas Pro 9, and I am a bit unsure how to properly do slow motion.

First of all, should I shoot 720p/60, or 1080p/24?
The reason I am not sure is because I don't know if shooting in 60fps will be too too slow, or maybe to fast.

Secondly, When I import the video onto Vegas, what do I need to do to make it in slow motion? I know how to adjust speed roughtly, but how do I know by how much percent?

...if that makes any sense? Not sure how to say it properly.

Shoot at as high a framerate as you need. How do you know how much you need? Work the math out. If an action take 2 seconds real time, and you need it to take 10 seconds on screen, then you need a 5x slowdown. so if your movie is 24p then you need 120fps frame rate. Once you have the math sorted, you simply drop the footage into Vegas, and stretch it to the time you measured out before you shot it.

"and at high shutter speed. Anything between ~1/300th to 1/1000th is good."

I thought 1/125 for 60fps slow motion?
Why a higher shutter speed?

No, those shutter speeds would be ridiculously high. You'd want 1/120 or so.

Really, what you're trying to do is match the shutter speed of the 24p footage taking into account the higher frame rate you're shooting. Basically, 24p is normally shot at 1/48 or something very close to it. Which means the shutter is "open" for half the time each frame is exposed. You want the same thing in the 60p footage, to match brightness at the same iris, so you want it to be open for half the time as well -- 1/120.

> Am I going a bit crazy now?

If you're trying to match the speed of other footage, then use as much shutter speed as the times slowed down. For example, if the majority of your 24p footage was shot at 1/48th, shoot slow motion at 60p at around 1/120th (or up to ~1/200th as maximum). This will offer both a clean look and a match to your 24p's shutter speed (provided you shot your 24p footage at 1/48th, which is how it's typically shot as, as David mentioned).

> I cant seem to find where to change the speed.

Erm... you're in manual mode, right? If yes, by using the front wheel in most Canon dSLRs changes the shutter speed (at least it does on my 5D).

Right click on the event, properties, and change the playback rate to 0.400. This will turn a 60p video to a true 23.976 fps 24p video. No resampling will kick in this way, offering the best match for slow motion speed.
