slow motion tips

hi: i was shooting in squeeze mode - progressive and wanted to do some nice slow motion.
In the past i just used avid xpress' interpolated and it looks smooth but it looks quite bad with progressive filelds.

i was wondering your experiences to get nice slow motion.

i know some use twixtor but which settings? any tips or tutorials?

also red gl has something similar called optical flow. any experiences? i just want something simple and fast that works in most situations and not deal with many settings tweaking.

thanks in advance.

Re: slow motion tips

Did you try shooting your slo-mo scenes in 60i then trying to match them up with your progressive footage in post for a film look ?

Re: slow motion tips

Shooting progressive is not a good idea for footage that you intend to slow down. Shooting 60i yields much smoother slow motion.

But furthermore, slowing down 24P will only work (to what degree it works) if you're editing in a native 24P timeline. If you're trying to edit your footage in a 60i timeline, and slow down 24P footage, it will look disastrous.

Re: slow motion tips

amiganr1 is from germany so i guess he uses 25p/50i.
50i always gives better slomo cos there are in fact 50 "halfframes" to work with. 25p needs testing especially with the shutter and itr really depends on the movement captured: a snowboardtrick or just someone blowing out a candle?? slow down fast movement or slow down slow movement...best is to get a highspeed 16mm camera (150fps recommended) and lots of film ;)

Re: slow motion tips

cant you interlace progerssive film from 25p to 50i then slomo? whats the difference?

Re: slow motion tips

That would not work. The difference is how often motion was captured. Converting 25P to 50i doesn't change the fact that you only captured 25 motion samples. Capturing 50i in the first place gives you 50 motion samples to work with, and the more motion samples you have, the smoother your slow motion can be.
