Slow Motion Tests/Cheese 80's Rock Video Test

Rich Lee

I shoot Pirates.
a friend of mine is in a 80's cover band called Steel Mullet...

http://www.steelmullet.com/ (the gallery is worth a look, some hotties there)

anyway, they want me to do a video. i want to do a bunch of slow motion stuff...but i needed to see what kinds of stuff the dvx would get me. so i shot a little test last night. just some fluorescents and a few still photo lamps i have. i didnt want to make a big deal out of it, so we just shot it in a friends driveway.

i used RE:fields kit to take 60i footage and turn it into 30p, then interpreted the footage as 24p in a 24p timeline. there is some 24p footage mixed in as well.

the real video will have lots of ladies/groupies being sprayed/hosed down with water...and the guys in the band will have some serious hair and spandex. should be pretty fun...

peace!

btw...there was no music, he was just miming this shite..rockin out in his head.

Re: Slow Motion Tests/Cheese 80's Rock Video Test

Hell yeah!! Mötley Crüe!!

I think that that will do damn good! Nice work!

And yeah, the acting is superb!! ;)

Re: Slow Motion Tests/Cheese 80's Rock Video Test

LOL! ;D

Dang.. That was funny. Professional air-guitarring is a very hard skill to pull off. If this is the test... I can't imagine what the final product will look like.

Did you shoot letterbox or squeeze on this?

Not sure if you edit on PC or Mac, and I noticed your 3D background. Have you tried out "re-timer" yet?

I tried it on a friend's computer.. .the stuff is amazing. But it's close to $500.00.

Re: Slow Motion Tests/Cheese 80's Rock Video Test

Genuinely frightening, but mostly in a good way.

Regarding the slowed down footage (which looks good, though I assume there's quite a loss in resolution), I'm just wondering if you're shooting with the default 1/60th of a second shutter or a 1/120th of a second shutter? Since you'd be shooting primarily 24p with a "180º" shutter angle (1/48th of a second shutter speed), a 1/120th of a second shutter speed would look more consistant with 24p when slowed down....I've never tested this, though. If you have, I'm curious what you've found.

Re: Slow Motion Tests/Cheese 80's Rock Video Test

danke guys!

WaveRiderXIX- shot normal..no squeeze or letterbox. yeah, i use re-timer alot. it works well, but the only way to really guarantee that your footage wont have wierd artifacts, or jumps in the frame is to shoot in 60i then turn the fields into whole frames.

Policar- yeah i shot 120th for the slow motion stuff. im going to be shooting alot of shots of water driping off people...so im also going to be shooting some higher shutter speed stuff as well, to see al the individual drops and whatnot.

im for the most part pretty happy with the quality. yeah there is a quality hit, but its along the lines of what the xl1s would do to make progressive frames, which i didnt mind. to get that sort of slow motion effect, im more than happy sacrificing some rez for a few shots.

now image all those shots, with water pouring down, and makeup and mascara smearing down the guys face! should be really funny!

Re: Slow Motion Tests/Cheese 80's Rock Video Test

rich...

there are many problems with the video. I'm sorry to say but all your compositions are slightly off. in shot #22, there wasnt enough head room for the guitar lady. and the lightning, my god the lighting. you have so many over blown highlights. never never shoot directly into a light source...which is what you did half the time. my god. if you are in doubt, there is something called the zebra lines on your DVX camera that you can check for over exposure. did you even read your manual???

as for the acting, i dont know where you picked up this lady...but its obvious she is not from the SAG. i recommend holding auditions next time. and for your CG guitar. i could tell you really skimped on this one. IMMEDIATELY I could tell the guitar was nothing more than a basic polygon with an image texture on it. you didnt even bother to model the strings. yo man, what the hell are you doing, you are slipping...i expect better work in the future.

Re: Slow Motion Tests/Cheese 80's Rock Video Test

HAHAHA!!! you wanker! pretty funny man....

i like that you refer to IT as "guitar lady"...

my dvx didnt come with zebra lines...ive seen and rented ones that do, but for some reason mine didnt...is it a 100 version and not the a? my dvx has a P next to its name...i thought it was pal..but some one says it isnt. maybe its the version that doesnt have the zebra lines. anyway, in its place is a button that says "make all your shots kick f&*kin rocker ass!"...

j/k about the button thats says "make all your shots kick f@#kin rocker ass!" it realy just is blank button...with no text..but when i press it, is makes all my shots kick f@#kin rocker ass!

just kiddin just kidden...

hey thartly, why do you say he has nice teeth? he has teeth like mule. do you like donkey teeth?

:D

This is gonna fckin' rock out! Looks great for a test man. You mentioned that you used REvision Fieldskit. Have you tried using REvision Twixtor? I've used it and it does a pretty good job of duplicating frames to get really smooth slow mo.

Re: Slow Motion Tests/Cheese 80's Rock Video Test

yeah, twixtor ROCKS! actualy, i think what i might do is use fields kit to get the 60i footage to be 30p. then use twixtor to make it even slower...maybe to simulate some 120fps stuff...could be sweet.

And Young is right, that's one of the ugliest women I've ever seen.

Even for a quick test it looks totally pro. You've got some skills.
