GH3 Slow motion test footage at the Christmas Market

Watching the full resolution download footage, I'm not seeing much moire, but almost every brick wall shows aliasing.

I am wondering if an optical-stabilized lens like the 12-35mm f/2.8 would have helped reduce this? ( the 20mm f/1.7 Lumix lens does get a fair bit of processing by the camera )

I think it look great! Nice video

quick question: Where/how did you pick the music? I can never find find good music for my videos.Takes me forever.

Thanks in advance

The issue is that it seems to be a pretty sizable step down from the GH2, though.

Depends on what you're looking at. I am definitely hanging on to my GH2 camera for things where aliasing might be an issue, but there are many areas where the GH3 is a better camera.

Both cameras = Best of Both Worlds

I think that 12-35mm lens is exhibiting even more aliasing as it is razor sharp also. The shaky cam of course exagerates the effect so IS might decrease it.
What kind of 'processing' does the 20mm 1.7 get from the camera?

This is some music from an artist called Tycho, but it is not royalty-free. Sshht, dont tell anyone.
For paid shoots I sometimes go to Tribeofnoise.com . Music there is free to use if you mention the artists & song in the credits. Good luck.

Right off the top of my head, I know that distortion and chromatic aberration are being corrected with the 20mm f/1.7 lens. ( not sure if vignetting is also corrected with some cameras )

Compare the top corrected grid with the uncorrected grid right below it : Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 Lens Test Report

Now compare the 12-35mm distortion correction at the 20mm focal length : Panasonic LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm f/2.8 Lens Test Report

Aah thanks. Didn't know that. Are there any downsides to that in camera processing?

What I am wondering is: Does this in-camera processing make aliasing worse?

I guess the test would be to put an old-school non-electronic lens on the GH3 and see if the amount of aliasing changes.

great!

Thanks for the reply!

I have a gh3 on pre-order, after reading this post I wonder: Is there any reason to buy the gh3 or should I pick up a gh2? The video look great except for the artifacts...Am I to understand that these are noticeably less on the gh2? The gh may wind up being a bcam to the new AF100A if and when that appears. Did you use any ND filters and if so which? (I have an exterior shoot coming up)

Thanks!

Hi, I didnt use the variable ND filters I have because it was a cloudy, dark day at the afternoon in the winter. ISO never went higher than 800. But I have used the L.C.W. variable ND filter MK II a lot with good results before.

There is a lot of aliasing going on. More than I expected. The pattern is also unexpected. Sometimes I shoot at something and go like 'this has to show aliasing', and it doesnt. And then when I shoot my white t-shirt with a very small, normal fabric pattern, it is all over the place.
It is much better than the Canon's which show extreme aliasing with almost every fine pattern / brick walls, but it is there. Myself I have never shot with a GH2, but almost everyone confirms the GH2 has fewer aliasing going on. So in that regard, the GH2 might be the better choice.

From the other hand, the GH3 has more dynamic range and better colors. Detail / resolution is about the same. IQ wise, you sacriface some aliasing for more dynamic range and better colors with the GH3 over the GH2. I'm not listing all the other advantages of the GH3 over the GH2 here, but to name a few: Higher bitrate, 1080p slowmo, better / bigger body, longer battery life, etc. You pay a lot more for this also.

i wonder how much of this has to do with the lens? the pancake is a very (overly?) sharp lens. i have a project coming up in the next couple weeks where i may get to slap a range of lenses on a GH3. looking forward to seeing how that pans out...

Sigh. So close but yet so far. I thought I was going to be able to completely replace my Mark III but sometimes the aliasing on the GH3 is troubling. I had it happen on a zipper on a jacket the other day and you can forget about rooftops or shingles. I can honestly say aliasing and moire is the one factor keeping the camera away from being perfect smh.

Stab,

May I ask which codec you used? I've found the All-Intra (MOV I) codec, even tripod mounted, to be unusable due to moire. The standard (MOV) codec at any frame rate is as moire free as the GH2.

In a worst case scenario, would it be considered blasphemy to think about a Mosaic filter for a GH camera. It could make gh3 the near perfect replacement to the gh2 without any drawback.

I used the 50p mode at 1080p. There is no option to choose All-intra at that framerate...

I am still not sure which is the best mode for 'normal' framerates. You think the All-intra has more aliasing?

that was my next question...
