GH3 Slow motion test footage at the Christmas Market

I took the GH3 to the Christmas Market today and did some test shoots at 50p. Slow motion looks good! The only lens used was the Panasonic 20mm f 1.7.

Slowly I'm getting used to the camera, the settings I should use and of course how to grade them. Still not there though :)

I'm happy with the purchase, as the footage clearly looks better than Canon DSLR's. More detail / resolution, a tad more dynamic range to my eyes, 1080p 50/60p, and fewer aliasing and moiré. Unfortunately, the moiré is (still) there. In this test shoot there are lots of buildings in the frame, and virtually every building shows some degree of moiré. In most cases it acceptable, but some shots were ruined (I didnt use them all).

Now, I was shooting handheld (which you shouldnt / wont do on a professional shoot) and this highly increases moiré, so keep that in mind. Let me know what you think or if you have any questions.

I need to see this on a bigger monitor but so far the footage looks good. Didn't see much issue with moire. Makes me even more excited about getting the camera.

Thanks for sharing.

Man, there is a LOT of aliasing in this footage. Reminds of a Canon.

Yes there is, but it is not as bad as with the Canons imo. With the canons you cannot shoot any brick will, with the GH3 not every wall is aliasing and if you would shoot the buildings on a tripod, I doubt you would see much. The Canons also show aliasing with people's hair, clothes, etc and that I can almost not see in the GH3 footage.
Its a big step up from Canon, but a step downwards from the GH2.

hi Stab, done any experimenting with the "frame rate" function for slow motion?

i'm in europe also so 50fps is the max we can shoot in yet the "frame rate" function we can get another 10% slower, i think.

Hi.

No didnt experiment with it yet. This was just shot in 50p with shutter speed 1/100th and some 1/125th and then conformed to 24p in Premiere CS5.
Will check that out later!

Has been fixed, put it on my company's account.

Looks a lot better, nice!

Aliasing is bound to happen on those wide shots with the 20mm lens and such sharp edges but overall looks great. Might want to next time use a longer lenses on some of those shots to focus on certain things, I suggest the 45mm or more. Keep em coming.....

wow. aliasing and moire is pretty noticeable. not quite canon at 720 noticeable. but i played the downloaded clip for my girlfriend and she pointed out more than i originally saw without even being told specifically what to look for.

from what i'm seeing from tests, it looks like with the GH line you can choose either better dynamic range of the 3 or lesser aliasing of the 2

i dont buy that at all. by this logic should we just accept that any action scenes are just gonna look like crap from here forward? i dont think so.

No, but we are talking about brick walls and architecture here. Many camera's show some degree of aliasing when shooting such sharp edges. Some brick walls don't even show aliasing in this video, whereas the canon's would show aliasing in every single stone.
The shaky camera changes the angle on the sharp edges constantly and hence increases the perceived aliasing. I dont want to defend the camera, because I was the one pointing out the aliasing in the first place and I'm certainly not happy with it after spending this much money. But, it's still a huge step up from canon's and most camera's.

Also, keep in mind this was the 50 fps mode. Didn't do enough testing yet to see if it has more aliasing than other modes but it might.

1 question:

This video does not show up on Vimeo in the search results, whatever I type. In the privacy settings it is set to 'available for everyone'. Nothing is hidden. What could cause this?

Vimeo are currently upgrading their search options and it is at the moment only showing videos which were uploaded about a week ago.
