Slow Motion but Lip Synced Music Video Technique

According to Barry's chart, if i film in 48fps for using a 24p timeline, i need to play the song at 200.80% speed.

I just converted the song as a test. At 200.80% speed, the words are totally incomprehendable!

it must be 100.80 % i'm supposed to speed it up by... i'm just confusing myself now...
Okay, well, if you play the song at 100% speed, you wouldn't have sped it up at all, right? So 100% = normal playback. If you play it at 200% speed, you will be playing it twice as fast as normal. So you'd speed it up by 100% to get it to play at 200%. Does that make sense?

And keep in mind, the chart I made is for the HVX/HPX cameras. It is not to be used with any others, because I don't know what other cameras' actual frame rates would be.

right i figured thats what you meant barry . 100% is normal speed, not 100% faster. the two different ways of thinking about it had me lost for a sec.

Can you tell me if this is right:

Red Camera
Film at 48 fps
Speed song up so it is 100.80% FASTER (just a tiny bit more than doubled)
23.98 timeline in Final Cut Pro

Yeah?

so i really do have to speed up the song by 200.80%???

really?

First, no... you're confusing 200% playback speed with a 200% increase, but it seems that youve figured that out.

You need to read up on RED and figure out what their exact rate values are.

Most "24p" talk around here actually refers to 23.976. Remember that video doesn't run at a perfectly rounded frame rate. Standard NTSC video runs at 29.97. That extra 0.03 is there, but is occupied by color sync information (blanking) and does not contain any of the viewable video content.

23.976 x 2 is 47.952. i'm guessing that is not an option on any camera.

now someone will probably swoop in and tell me i'm wrong about that ha ha...

i think i should be safe with 48.

if the Red shoots in 48 , that is.. looking at the specs on their website now i dont see any frame rate options between 30 - 50.

Yeah?
I don't know what speed the Red runs at when it's at 48fps. You'd have to ask them. If it's true 48.000 fps, or 49.752, or ??? You'd have to know that answer before you tried to speed up the song by a certain percentage.

My guess is that the Red probably uses discrete frame rates that are actual multiples, so it'd probably be 100% faster for 48fps.

I'm still looking into whether or not the Red can shoot at 48 fps.

Just to be sure I understand correctly here.. say I am working with a 24p timeline, and I shoot something in 48fps. When I import that footage onto my timeline, I won't have to adjust the speed of it at all because it's already slow motion, right?

What I did before for my testing was film in 30fps, then in FCP just slowed it down 50%. I am unfamiliar with higher frame rates so please forgive my noviceness. oh, apparently noviceness is not a word. well i think it should be.

Anyways. Is that right? 48fps would be exactly 50% slow mo when placed on a 24p timeline automatically?

Ok I have confirmed that the Red cam does have the 48fps capability. The sad thing is, we won't have a chance to test out this technique with that particular camera before our shoot on Saturday.

I know I can make this work if we film it all at 24fps and slow it down 50% in post, while the singer has used a song sped up by 100.80%.

My question is this... should we in fact use the 48fps option?

From what I understand, filming at 48fps would be the exact same thing as filming at 24fps and slowing it down by 50% in post. The only difference would be that it would already be in slow motion at 48, so i wouldn't need to slow it down. It would already be slow motion, and when I import it into FCP, it should perfectly sync with the original speed song.

Is this correct?

If the Red has a true 48fps (47.952, actually) then you'd speed the song up by 100.0%.

That 100.80 was specific to the HVX/HPX series.

Okay so we filmed the video on Saturday and it was a SUCCESS. We mostly filmed in 24p but when we got a chance we did about 5 or 6 takes at 48fps with the song playing double speed..

Our singer had been practicing in advance and NAILED it, which I was really impressed by because it's not easy to sing along to a song at double speed without messing up at least a little.

The slow motion in the Red looks AMAZING.

And the best news of all - It all perfectly syncs. We had a fan blowing in her hair and she was dancing and this put into slow mo just looks fantastic.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice, I don't think I would have tried it if you hadn't assured me it would work!!!!! I'll post a link to the vid in a few weeks when I'm done editing... :)

There is a plugin I think called Twixtor where you can speed up or slow down your video but keep lip sync all matched up. A friend of mine has it and will be using it on his next music video. I am eager to see the results of his shoot.
