most of the questions on slow-mo have to do with trying to get good slowmo in 24p project. ie shoting in 60i then slowing to 40 for a good slow mo in a 24p project.

if you plan on using a regular 30 project can you shot in 60i or 30p and slow the footage down to any speed you would like. or does the same 80/40 rule apply.

you can always slow whatever footage to whatever speed but if you want smooth, strobeless slow motion then you need to follow those rules. if your project will be edited at 29.97fps then the only way to get smooth half speed slo mo is to shoot at 60i, then deinterlace each field of your clips into a full frame using JES deinterlacer or similar then bring the new clip in to your NLE at 100% speed. it will play back at half the speed of the original while maintaining a 30fps rate and will be glass smooth. only drawback is because you are taking a single field which is made up of only half the lines and converting it into a full progressive frame, you will lose half of your vertical resolution so anything with sharp edges may look choppy and pixelated when played back at full rez (i.e. on your tv). small rez web clips will look fine.

BTW this thread should have been in the technical or NLE forum, not under screen grabs/footage......
