Slow Mo Confusion

Hey there everyone,

I have questions and concerns regarding slow motion with 24P.

I have read through this:

http://www.rarevision.com/articles/slow_motion.php

But I am curious, does this only allow you to slow down to the 41.6% of the original speed? What if you want to go inbetween? I guess you could always precomp, and then change the speed of that clip.

How will the quality of the footage be after going from 60i to 24P? Would it be usefull to use re:vision fields kit?

Will the footage, once slowed down, still look like video shot in 60i? Or will it be congruent with 24P footage?

In light of all this, should I still invest in a retiming plugin like retimer or twixtor?

If so, which one is recommended? Twixtor, Digital Anarchy retimer, or realviz retimer?

My brain hurts... ???

Thanks for any help.

Re: Slow Mo Confusion

I am confused as well.

Does one need AfterEffects to do the deinterlacing of the 60i footage to create slo-mo @ 24 p playback? Or can FCP4 take 60i footage and render 60 frames of progressive fields?

I only have FCP4, and when I have tried it, the slo-mo is just 30 frames doubled. Not smooth like the example link from the first post. What am I doing wrong, and what would be the correct procedure for deinterlacing the 60i footage in order to fake that really cool slo-mo?

Help?

Re: Slow Mo Confusion

Using the technique in the article will let you slow down 60i footage to a maximum of 41.6% before you need to start interpolating frames. AE will allow you to vary the speed of the footage, so you can pick something in the range of 41.6%-100% of normal speed. However, 41.6% is not *that* slow.

Re:vision fields will do a better job constructing frames from fields, but for an extra $90 --it should have been included with Twixtor.

The slowed down footage will have a unique look--not 24p or 60i or over-cranked film. I use Twixtor which seems to work fairly well, but the demos I've seen of Realviz ReTimer look pretty good. If you go below 41.6% of normal speed as per the article, AE will start frame blending--which does not look very good. The plugins have demo versions available, so try them and see what you think. They're on the expensive side, but they do a superior job if you really want to slow things down.
