Slow harddrive in Laptop

Has anyone used Laptop for live capture from HVX? I have problems with this. HDDVC50 goes ok, but 72050P gives all the time "disk too slow"-rapport. I have 7200 rrm sata drive and as fast reg.drives and Inter DUo 2,2 MHz. The laptop is ACER Travelmate 7720G model. Show have fast enough?

Never use your laptop SYSTEM drive to capture media, no matter what the speed. It is busy running the OS. Always use external drives when capturing media.

Yes, I have 7200 rmp sata extra drive where I tried capture, didn't work eigther...

Also I tried with my table PC with Intel Quadro 6600, my harddrive are 7200 rpm. Didn't work...

Really looking forward to get a solution to this...

I bought a cheap WD My Book 1 T 7200 rpm USB drive that captures 1080 HD with no problems from my laptop. I guess your only down side is that it needs to be powered by a wall plug but I'd think you could make a battery pack for it.

What software are you using to capture?

1440x1080 50i works!

1440x1080 50i works!

Could there be a bug in program. I have Edius 4.62 the latest prior 5. Thinking that the 1440 1080 50i with same bandwidth captures without problem!

I assume that you're using EDIUS 4.x. There is still a bug in this NLE and 720p direct capturing doesn't work. Circumvention: HVX Recording Setup -> set Timecode to free run (thanks to THOFF).

Thanks, I'll try this. Kind of remember that you have mentioned this earlier already?

Wonder if Edius 5 will correct this? At least Grass Walley has have enoung this to fix this.

I use Edius 4.51 and Avid Media Composer 2.8, no probs with Edius to my WD My Book 7200 rpm drive. I remember reading somewhere on the Edius form about tuning your system to prevent the error message. It had several tips to help the prob.

Thanks, I just had advice as seen in this chain! The HVX setting of timecode (freerun) was the key to bypass Edius bug.

By a way, can You use Media Compser to live capture HD?

Yes, Media Composer can capture direct to a hard drive. I just installed it on my laptop and have not tried yet to see if there are any problems. I'm rendering a big file right now but I will give it a try in a while and let you know.

The good thing about Media Composer is the really good DnX HD codec, the olympics used it for all the olympic tv broadcasts.

Good to know, I have also uppdated Liquid to MC while there was a good bargain. Haven't yet installed it. I'll think both NLE's are still good to have. What is your opinon of these NLE's? You have used both. Pros and con of both, would like to hear!

I just captured to Media Composer through my WD My Book 7200 rpm usb drive in 1080 HD without the DNx codec so basicly no compression and didn't have any problems. I did get an error when I tried to record to my internal 5400 rpm laptop drive. I had to Auto configure the camera in capture mode because there is no hvx 200 setting, it decided on dv100 ntsc and worked fine.

I love Edius for the speed and ease of cutting footage and the P2 integration is the best there is (for now).

Avid is more challenging to use but I'm learning more every day. What took me 3 hours to organize a project in Edius took 12 hours in Avid. Avid also doesn't support the P2 meta data (or at least in my version 2.8, dunno about 3.0).

For ease and speed you can't beat Edius.

The reason why I bought Avid is for the effects and the integration with 95% of the film / tv business.

Let me ask you this, what do you do or what type of stuff do you edit?

video's integrated to many projects!

video's integrated to many projects!

As "journalist" succest I write stuff to technical magazine and make videos to add value to articles. (Really interested to get Canon 5DII type still/video camera). Then we have an asignment to take care of all photo/video-production of one pro ice-hockey club. I take also individual projects, one historydocument is on the way to TV, trying to get trough one other too. So I do all kind of stuff. HVX is my main cam, probably getting 170 to accomplish. On reporting trips I use Pana's litte AG-HSC1 AVCHD Cam, which is nearly comparable to HVX in "easy conditions". Plus very handy. For still's I have Canon's EOS-1 Mark IIN, so I really wait for Canon's "Europe" model of 5DII, to have 25p or 50i shooting. Integrated still/video-camera would really be perfect for journalism - could leave off video-gear altogether on these trips. (we don't have separate photographers available - I am freelancer there also).

Yep, I'd wait for the 5DII. I think I'm going to buy one here in the U.S. it'll be perfect for what you do.

I'd stick with Edius if I were you, it works with the avchd format as I'm sure you know :) the avid does not. Edius is great because you can have 3 or 4 different camera's / formats all shot in various resolutions and throw them all on the time line and start editing. In Avid I have to convert them all to the same format before I start although the new 3.0 might be more like edius.

Part of education!

Part of education!

Well, I admit I was tempted to get MC 3 because of the Liquid campain. In fact I hate to keep learnig NLE after an other all the time... Edius feels now after less than 2 years quite handy. I did like Liquid also.

Our national broadcasting company uses entirely MC now and this was one reason. Younger generation might get credit to know MC too. So there are many reasons...

I assume that you're using EDIUS Broadcast 4.x. There is still a bug in this NLE - 720p direct capturing doesn't works. As a circumvention you can set the timecode of your HVX to free run. With this "hack" you should be able to capture 720p.
***Sorry duplicate reply. My original entry disappeard temporarily.

The last thing I have time to do is learn another NLE, Edius is so simple, after an hour of reading I was slicing & dicing with panny's & sony's in all different formats and resolutions.

Edius made it really easy for me, I do have to learn Avid more. In this business you have to wear all hats if you want to have a successful production co. that means being a DP, Editor, Director, Producer, Audio Guy, Chef, Janitor, etc... I think the Avid education will pay off in the future if you deal with large networks / film studios... It's a standard that we have no choice in :)

I had to spend 2 hours on the phone with a major production co. (they broadcast network tv world wide) telling the head editor how to import P2 footage into Avid (I also sent him links from this site explaining it, hope they come back). It's a pain right now and they all know it but times are changing, P2 will get better with Avid.
