FS7: Slog3 noise

So we've been shooting a lot more s-log3 with our FS7 lately. We add the REC709 type A LUT in post using Lumetri in Adobe Premiere. Most of the time, the footage looks good. We did notice banding in some images, but once we rendered the footage with the highest quality render settings, the footage looked clean (we are pretty sure this has to do with premiere displaying 8 bit with the banding issue and then renderring a higher bitrate when the image becomes clean???).

Unfortunately, when we make an output file, we get a lot of noise back in the image. This never happens with non slog3 footage (footage shot in custom mode with a non log gamma).

Is this a problem with premiere? We can't understand why our pretty slog3 footage starts falling apart on output. We usually make progress 422 HQ output files.

Thanks!

What kind of player do you display the footage in? Most of them show a higher black level than what you might see in the NLE. You could experiment with different output codecs as H264 or MXF OP1a to see what happens and play it in different players.

Try exporting from a different program with the same LUT. Both Catalyst Browse and Davinci Resolve Lite are free and can do this. If you see the noise in those as well, then it's probably the footage. If not, then the issue is Premiere.

Adobe Premiere just came out with a new version. I installed it, got rid of my preview files and tried exporting again. Everything looks good. It's not the fault of the camera.

Thanks!
