Slog vs ISO800 HG8

you are about to jump into a rabbit home of painting inside the F35.

Play with black gamma, saturation and low key saturation, I found these made big difference on the final image.

SLOG can be cleaned up because you end up crushing those blacks a bit in post, but I have always been interested in having a ready to view profile in my camera. I found by going through and making a color profile for F35 build in to give best color out of the box, you can get very clean blacks. Also surprisingly the camera will push fine to 12dB once the black are crushed. The noise in the F35 shadows can be a bit too much. I find F35 noise/grain most pleasant in the well lit area. Getting the blacks clean and less details in the shadows makes the whole image look a lot cleaner without loosing any of the F35 grain magic.

It is true that coloring the image inside the F35 happens at the 14-bit analog level. To what this is worth, the SLOG is graded at 10 or 12-bit so painting inside the camera actually can produce better color. However SLOG gives you the most information possible and it is easier to fine tune and tweak an image recorded this way.

Thanks for the tips. I find the F35 menus daunting in the paint section....so playing with those elements you mentioned is going to make the road less painful....

One thing I like about the ISO 800 mode is that I can grade with the Primaries, and the look is dialed in from the beginning. It really saves a lot of time in grading. Not sure why everyone is so obsessed with slog... if it looks good you are game. I may be wrong, and would love to see some examples if anyone has any. As you are saying... 14bit analog conversion seems to be quite magical in the camera. Instead of doing it all in post. But I may be complicating things and just do it like MacGregor suggests... CineEI, a meter and get shooting. His work looks way better than mine... so maybe it is time to stop fiddling...

Post any tests you guys do, and Yachacha if you have any examples of your Black Gamma etc please post them. They all mean nothing to me, and the manual is quite poor in this section.

Seems like a lot of work/trial-and-error when you've already got a terrific, easily graded starting point with straight SLOG. Why add the complexity?

Weeeelllll... I was trying the ISO 800 mode to see if low light s/n ratio was improved. It is and it improves the highlight detail, so why the hate. I will use the special mode on low light shoots. Also need to check skin tones in that mode in brightly lit scenes... since it’s easier to grade, if the results are better I see it as a great approach.

Dealing with the paint menus is a different story, not really feeling that so much...
