F3: Slog question and a broken microphone mount

Hello!
I just recently got the Sony F3 - updating from my Canon 600D - and noticed that the rubber part of the microphone mount is broken and now wont attach to the top handle anymore. Is it possible to buy another mount (third part?) that will attach to the F3 socket or does one have to fall back on duck tape?

My second question concerns the HD SDI slog option, when selecting the 3G 422 slog version the camera is still giving me a Rec 709 image while all other options (including 1.5G and the 444 ones) give me the proper slog image, anyone got this problem too?

I also wanna thank @macgregor for creating the slog LUTs and making it a piece of cake for any newcomer to start grading slog, also thanks goes to anyone else in the F3/F35 community for supplying all kinds of information and tips and tricks!

I use a Sony CAC-12 mike holder screwed into the Berkey plate on top of my F3. The hole spacing on the mike holder base needs a little drilling out, but it takes three minutes and you're good to go.

I can recommend LUTcalc for making great LUTs for Slog1. To go from Sgamut Slog1 to Sgamut3.cine and Slog3 is a great start. From there you can apply all the regular LC709A etc etc

Yes, the use of rubber to help 'isolate' the mic mount from the camera proved problematic on the F3. Particularly because many sound recordists - who were used to the earlier hard-attached mic holders from the EX series - would thread their quick release cables through the mic holder as a strain relief. One good tug or snag and the rubber of the mic holder would break.
I do highly recommend the Berkey top-plate for the F3 - which gives you the option to mount any number of alternate mic holders. Or if you aren't using the hot shoe, there are mic holders that can attach there. In my case I also mounted a 1/4" thread post on the berkey plate towards the back of the camera to act as an anchor point for strain relief of cables - both audio and video.

If you noticed the knurled knob just below the mic holder on the handle, that can be removed to allow you to pull out the connector-to-camera part of the original mic holder. If you have all the pieces of the original rig you could probably epoxy everything back together to make it usable again.

Even though many of these holders broke, I doubt that there was enough demand for anyone to make a direct third-party solution that attached into the original slot.

I never had that problem. But I did find that the colors are all messed up in S-Log/S-Gamut mode on the F3. No amount of correction fixes it.

I think you are better off setting Dual-Link & Gamma Select to Video, and customizing the picture profile with matrix set to Standard, and gamma set to Cine1 or S-Log.

Thanks for the answers!

@captslomo & OnSet Luckily the F3 came with the top plate so I got all the mounting options I need. The CAC-12 is a little to expensive for my liking, but any mic mount will do I assume.

@stokstad Heard about that program before, I'll give it a look! I use the Impulz Luts quite a lot and they have a profile for the original S-log so thats neat. I wanted to do a test with different Luts and gradings to see what works best, I'll post it here after I shoot it if you guys are interested.

@balazer I only found the colors to be messed up when I use the pp S-log, but everything looks fine using the SDI option.

When using pp S-log have you gone into the picture profile and turned off everything like matrix, black point etc etc?

The Impulz LUTs worked well for me when I needed that look. But for some stuff I wanted a more "neutral look".

Good luck

Well, I looked through the pp settings but decided it's more trouble than it's worth and just use the S-log through the SDI option.

I found the 50D Kodak stock looks the most natural to me, I just really like the look. :cheesy:

Tell me about it. Whenever anyone talks about the irrational expense of TV gear, the CAC-12 is what I always point to as a prime example of so much money for such a small accessory.
