Slog plugin

I remember seeing a plugin for AE that helped working on Slog without ever clipping the highlights. I can't remember the name of the plugin but I'd like to take a look at it again.

Pomfort Plug-In works in FCP X. I find it a great starting point and in some (rare) instances it might be all you need.

For those looking to work on SLOG without any fancy plugins there are some tools built into AE or Premiere (and likely FCP) that will help shape your highlights and prevent clipping them once you do further grading. It's also great for working with cine gamma's 1,3 & 4 where you are able to record illegal signals (over 100IRE).

A simple way is to add the "fast color corrector" and down near "Output Levels" adjust the white slider on the right side (white levels) slowly to the left to bring your white down below 100. (seen in red on picture). Also if you overexposed your image (common with SLOG if you didn't use grey card, or your image contrast ratio is low) then you can also pull your blacks down by using the black slider on the left side under the "Input Levels" (seen in blue on picture) and sliding slowly to the right.

If you keep this video effect first in your effects list then all subsequent adjustments are made from your new "baseline".

For S-Log, first I started grading in FCP X by playing with the included sliders, not so good, then I used Magic Bullet Looks 2.0 which has more sophisticated contrast adjustments and other nice features. I just came upon the Pomfort plugin, and it is so easy for footage that is properly exposed to get really close. I then make small adjustments with FCP and/or MB Looks for exposure and saturation, maybe a little color corrector, etc. since I am using the baked in 5600 S-Log outdoors. I am sure for more professional usage, it takes a lot more talent, but for me a good de-log program is a great starting point.
Pomfort works in FCP 7 and X. They let you demo it for free.

Fast color corrector in AE????

There is no fast color corrector in AE, but you can use LEVELS which is doing the exact same thing - execpt it does not give you hue/color/saturation controls in same filter. If need those too you can add the 'Hue/Saturation' filter in AE. There is NO NATIVE waveform monitor in AE, so for this reason I prefer to do it in Premiere where the footage is being edited anyway. You can get waveform plugin, of color finese synthetic aperture has one built in.

Using LEVELS in AE:
