slog 4:4:4 vs Redcode 3:1

Can someone please elaborate on how slog 4:4:4 compares to Redcode 3:1? I am not completely familiar with the intricacies of the RED format, so I am not entirely sure how the two formats compare in terms of compression, bit depth etc.

What I do know is that unlike ArriRAW, RED RAW footage is not entirely uncompressed, but has at a minimum 3:1 compression.
But then again slog 4:4:4 isn't really true RAW either (or is it?)

Thanks in advance.

REDRAW is non-debayered, making it hard to compare at all, since RGB is three times as much data to start with. It's a wavelet codec (like DCP), that#s about all known to the world outside of RED.
S-Log RGB 444 is no compression at all (other than the log-curve), it depends on the device you use to record. ProRes 4444 for example is compressed, but can hold up to 12 bit and great quality.

You have to compare with your own eyes.

S-Log is logarithmic, like Arri's LogC. Neither are RAW, they have already been 'treated' with the basics.

I heard a good analogy. Think of Red RAW like untreated water. You need to chlorinate it (debayer), and filter it (color correct) before using.

S-Log is already debayered (chlorinated), but still needs to be filtered (CC'd). Some people call S-Log or LogC advanced because there is one less step, others call it RAW lite.

The answer is, it doesn't matter what you call it because you can get what is wanted out of it, greater performance.

Note: The Gemini can record 4.4.4 uncompressed but you'll use a lot of drives (or a busy data wrangler.)

Dug this up as it contains a good stab and some analogies on the difference between Raw and LOG.

Although with the F5/F55's it is still too early to tell, I am having high hopes with their Raw format at the least.

So, how does the Ikonoskop A-Cam DII RAW output compare in these RAW categories do you know?
