SLOG 10 bit 422

It seems to me there's a dramatic improvement in shooting SLog in 10bit 422.
The image requires sharpening in 8 bit, but not really in 10 bit, also the skin tones seem easier to grade.

I don't claim to have colorist skills, this is just a down and dirty test in Premiere.
I was just QC'ing some footage, but after a quick color pass, I think I'll be very pleased with the final result.

(BTW, I discovered that by watching here on DVXUser and hitting the "enter full screen" button, that the image is only an SD version blown up.
So please hit the VIMEO logo and watch in full res on their site. Thanks.)

Feedback?

I'd love to know if there is any difference between the two, but from what I've read extensively the only difference is the ability to record 444, LUTS, and exposure index.

I did not know that about vimeo!

About using Premiere to add LUT to (or "de-SLOG") footage, I just wrote about some quick'n dirty ways to do that in my biased F3 blog if you are interested to read about it. (It covers After Effects as well).

As for taking advantage of 422 10-bit it would be interesting to see Nina graded up 1-1.5 stops over the background and see how it holds up.

This is the paid upgrade, Dennis. Is there a difference in the versions?

I have both, paid the $900 a ways back and then got the picture profile one through 1.4 firmware. The biggest difference for me is that when in the Picture Profile version I can perform a auto white balance off a card. This is great when I know my lighting isnt spot on 5600 or 3200, makes grading / correcting a little easier. Amongst other adjustments you can also have sharpening on when using the profile, although I never sharpen in camera.

Ah yes I recall that with SLOG RGB many features were locked out, and people had gripes about having to choose a preset WB. You could always use a 1/4 or 1/2 warming filter balanced at 5600 but I know that's not the same is being able to dial it in yourself. I often find myself shooting 3400, 4400 & 5200 depending on circumstance.

I guess what I really meant was aside from camera feature lock outs, etc.. is there any actual gamma difference or "quality" difference between the RGB SLOG and the Picture Profile SLOG.

Well I searched around and good old Andy Shipsides answers the question in this blog posting here: http://blog.abelcine.com/2012/06/28/new-f3-firmware-adds-s-log-to-every-camera/

He says to make them the "same" he turns off matrix, aperture, and lowers detail and that is all.

Anyway none of this has really much to do with the thread - sorry Bill !!

Don't apologize for sharing the knowledge Dennis!

I'm addicted to LUTS on set so I use the RGB S-Log.
Until the camera outputs false color I'll use the Rec709 800% LUT to help me expose my highlights.

Then again, I always use an 18% grey card and the meter in the camera to expose skin tones at the recommended 38%.
