Tech question re slomo...

I have shot a heap of footage at 25p in the past and understand it may not look as creamy smooth in slowmo.

If I shoot at 50p, that gives me more latitude, correct ?

What about shooting at 96FPS ? Does that only mean that the footage can be played back at the slowmo rate and I can't play it at normal speed ? I do more run and gun so it means I can't really plan and don't have the time to switch the frame rates to 96, etc.

I would shoot everything at 50fps then you have the option of slow motion or not when on a 25p editing timeline. I think 96fps suffers too much of a quality hit for my taste.

Actually you do have time to switch in real time between 1080-50p, 4K 25p and 96fps. It's super easy to setup with two taps on the back of the cam.

- Set your cam to have variable frame rate turned on at 96 fps in the menu all the time.
- Set your fn2 button to show the screen with all the different recording modes.
The top left is 4K 25p, the second over from the left on the middle row is 1080-50p 100mbps and the second from the right on the middle is 96fps conformed to 30p.

It takes 3 seconds to change recording mode on the GH4. That particular fn2 screen is one of the most useful functions and what makes the GH4 so great.

Give that set up a try some time and you'll see how cool it can be to just get what you want in the heat of the moment.

Cheers,
Pete
