slo mo, but with normal singing tempo....

Regarding a music video, I'm trying to figure out how to shoot a slow motion shot but still have the artist singing at the normal tempo.

Do I shoot, for example, 720p/24pN @ frame rate 60 and then film the artist singing at double the songs tempo?

doubling the tempo would work if you shot at 60 and played back at 30 or shot at 48 and played back at 24.

60 frames played back at 24 is actually about 63% slower. So you would need to speed the song up by that much.

hey jay, do you mean like those coldplay or dido video clips you see and they're moving slowly but just fast enough for them to mouth the words of the song?

This was covered a while back and I believe Berry chimed in at what speed you need to do this at so do a search.

Good luck

Michael, I tried the search feature, I didn't find any good info.

siraj, yep, that's pretty much what I'm looking to experiment with.

victor/huy, can u elaborate a little? I'm not sure I follow you.

let us know Jay how you achieve this. I'm curious as well. or if you find the thread.

If you're filming in 24pn mode and overcrank to 48 frames, you will want to double the speed of the song. So, the artist will be singing twice as fast, but when played back at 24 frames, they will be singing in time with the music.

I'm not good at math so I'm not even going to try to figure out the speed for any other frame rates.

ahh great info in this thread and in the provided links... thanks fellas... I'll be trying this stuff out next weekend for sure now!

Did you get this to work? I can't seem to speed up the audio in Final Cut. If I reduce the clip to 50% it works as it should, the song speed reduces by half. But if I increase the speed to 200%, instead of making the song faster, it just cuts my audio clip in half.

If you have FCS, take the audio in to Soundtrack Pro by selecting send to sountrack pro audio file project.

Then select the entire track.

Then select Process > Time stretch

A little pop up will come up that says Length of selection then a number then a drop down that defaults to samples.

Change the drop down to seconds. Calculate you percentage based on the number of seconds that come up and change the number to that.

Your track will reduce and be fast, but without changing the pitch.

Export that back to FCP.

Hope that helps.
