Slippery roads

Yikes! I hope no one was hurt.

And with that out of the way...

Sure.

The trick is getting them on the bear.

LOL.

Man, ice sucks. Same sort of thing happened to me when I lived in Greeley, Colorado. Car after car came sliding down the hill. 4WD = nada on a sheet of ice.

If I remember correctly, that was in Portland last year. The problem I have with it, is the drive is obviously hitting the gas even after he/she hits numerous cars (you can hear/see it plain as day). All they have to do is hit the brakes

If I had to guess, I'll bet it's a senior citizen behind the wheel hitting the wrong pedals.

On ice, you actually shouldn't hit any pedals. Same for hydroplaning.
That may depend on what tires you are using. In Canada we have certain winter tires that grip the ice quite well. I've seen tests down on solid ice.

Of course, slipping it into Neutral is never a bad idea in such conditions.

But it was obvious that some of the people in those videos were hitting the gas. You could hear it.

Wow. That was stressful. Just when you thought it might be over...more destruction...and lives at risk all caught on a handycam. This conjured up some of the same feelings I had when I saw "Cloverfield"...

PS All I could think about was "that person's insurance is going to go THROUGH THE ROOF".

That and people in California/westcoast arent quite used to driving in inclement weather.

NYer's drive just fine in the snow.... im just sayin.... ;)

And yes, if you are sliding out of control, breaking will do nothing for you (as you are sliding already, breaks won't make you stop any sooner, you are already skidding); however, accelerating (with a 4WD/FWD) to bring your front wheels up to your speed will allow them to grip and (hopefully) give you some steering control.

The driver trying to accelerate out of the slide was acting correctly.

But the real key is entering the situation slow enough in the first place that you can still safely accelerate if you do start to slide.

Though that street appeared to be basically sheet ice, so you don't have much hope either way - especially if you aren't on studded tires/chains.

Oh, and Max:
The trick is getting them on the bear.
is the funniest post I've seen in ages.

Yeah, same here in Vancouver, a little snow fall and there are accidents everywhere. I guess there is the mentality of the quicker you get out of the snow the less danger your in, therefore you speed up.

Losing control of your car in a spin is really odd feeling. Hands off the wheel brace for impact.
