(slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

Hi!
Well.. slightly off topic because it wasn't filmed using the DVX... yeah bash me now. Hehe sorry!
But it was posted on a german no-/low-budget film/video making board and I found it quite good for being only a sort of "basic" "band only" video (=no "real" Story being told).

http://sonuva-project.com/english/index-english.html

(called "Dead Eyes" - link is under 09/27/03)

or direct link:
http://www.sonuva-project.com/clips/deadeyes_web.mpg

They used a single XL1(s) for the shoot and some lights of course and a wheel dolly without tracks ... that's it .. color correction was done in post.
(if you have an opinion on it please post it in their "Feedback area" ;o)

Cheers,
-Sören

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

Not only is it NOT the DVX but it's an XL1s ?

Shame on you. Shame, shame, shame. >:(

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

Ah I already regret it... ;-)
PEACE!
Well I liked the crash zooms and thought that something similar should be possible with the DVX too!? (without having to use an expensive lense)

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

"I was just joshing you, Billy" (That's from Young Guns).

It was definitaley worth watching. Don't you hate when someone says "Hey, check out this music video!" and it's like the worst song you have ever heard? This song was good and the chick was kind of hot (in a dirty kind of rock chick way).

I agree, I think the DVX can definitley pull this off, and even better, in a 24p kind of way.

The POST was excellent. Very well done. Looked like something you would see on Mtv.

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

@John: I know what you mean... well I wouldn't have posted it here if I wouldn't have thought of the slightest chance somebody here might like it ;-)
They reminded me a little of the "Guano Apes" (german band but maybe a little know overseas too?!) ...

I have no doubt the DVX could pull this off easily. However here in europe well here in germany at least people are still sceptic about the DVX somehow... it's so sad! They are all still recommending the PD150 and XL1(s) and I have a hard time convincing people of the DVX... of course most of the time they are convinced when they see some pics/shots. But they are always rambling about the missing auto focus in 24/25P mode etc. ... it starts getting on my nerves. (if I would wait for the perfect cam in this price range I would not own one today)

@shai: have a look at their website I think there's much info on it! they are from arnold-country ;) ... austria... both the band and the video crew. the video was shot in an empty bedspring factory... this location even has a website:

http://www.bettfedernfabrik.at/

looks really well-kept etc.

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

Thanks for the details. Again, it was very well done (The POST effects great). Arnold country? lol :D

I will be voting for Arnold this coming Tuesday, as soon as they oust Gray Davis. Ahhh, there I go, telling everyone my political views. :-X

I, at one time, was very sold on the XL1s, but after tons of research, realized, I would N E V E R be able to afford the 'look' I was after that the XL!s requires. I think it's a great DV cam, but the accessory list is insane.

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

oh let's not start with XL1! i hate this camera!!!

although this clip looks pretty damn good

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

You could definitely see the nice LONG XL1 lens though.... wish my DVX had one :'(

I think that smash zoom stuff was done in post.

I liked it - I thought it was very well shot and edited. (Have no idea what the lyrics were about though...) ::)

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

You're going to vote for arnold? Hehe... although you could argue about competence/skills as a politician I still somehow envy you because something like this isn't very likely to happen here or possible at all... and most of the politicians here could really use a kick in the a.. ;-P

@24Peter ... yeah the lense is nice but as John already said... all the lenses and accessories aren't cheap at all.. :-(
BUT -> the crash zooms weren't done in post at all.. they assured me they've done it all when shooting using a zoom wipe on the manual zoom lense they used.

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

Re: crash zoom - nice - I'll have to try it on my DVX. That manual zoom ring must be good for something :o

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

Yeah exactly my thought! ;-)
Btw. I didn't meant to say they used a "zoom wipe" I just wrote "wipe" because what they used was a "wippe" in german but that would translate to sth. like "zoom rocker" hm according to my dictionary ;-) ... don't know if anyone now knows what I meant *lol*

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

Ah, got you, Soeren! ;) So that's the place you're usually around?

Thanks for promoting our site. :)

But actually it was no "Zoom-Wippe" (like we call it in german), but a lever, otherwise it would not have been possible. You can see that cute little thing (it is really small, but hey ... it works!) on the picture included in the right part of the sitedesign.

Thanx a lot to you guys. I really appreciate your commendations.
One thing: I owe the XL-1 (not 's'!) since about 5 years and I really don't know, if I would buy it once again. Sure, it's a great camera, IF ...
It's like John said: The accessory list is insane. But hey, on the other hand, that fact is the only reason to fall in love with this cam, because it's so variable. (The autofocus f.e. is the worst one I've ever seen.)

However, it's not the camera that makes a good clip or movie, ain't I right? ;)

see you
Günther

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

Me once again. ;)

I just wanted to say, that now there's an english version of the "Making Of"-Report online too! So check it out! (And please be patient, while my english may suck sometimes ...) ;)

cheers
Günther

Exactly. I think what we Californians need is a NON Politician. Th other politicians are already scared and releasing dirty campaign commericals trying to bash Arnold. It's funny.

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

By the way. I checked out the 'Making of' on the website. Great job. Thanks for giving us insight on how this was done.

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

Wow!!!!

So impressed :)

If XL1 can do this, then DVX has to!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd like to see something on the DVX like this soon.

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

I think they probably ran the raw footage of this thorugh Magic Bullet Suite?

Re: (slightly OT ;o) Music video/clip

You can read this in the making of - it's not done in post!
@Norm: I doubt they used Magic Bullet because they would have mentioned it in the making of page! Btw. is your website still over limit.. because "your head" still doesn't show up again! *g* ;)
And yes - we have to do something similar with the DVX to prove it can be done!!! :-)
Hm Norm I understand that you experimented with film look/deinterlacing too? Did you already try Magic Bullet? Do you use After Effects? From my "experiments" I'm conducting currently the Magic Bullet deinterlacer looks much better than all other I tried.
Nevertheless this is the best I could get out of some footage shot about 2 years ago using my old Sony TRV900 (lower priced 3CCD cam) with a 1.75x anamorphic adapter. So the aspect ratio is something about 2,33:1 ... quite cool :-)

http://www.soeren.de/frame1476.png
http://www.soeren.de/frame3799.png

Process done was PAL 720x576 -> deinterlacing -> color correction (I did several alternate versions and still can't decide which one suits a raggae-band in a local club best ;o) -> 1260x576 ...

Cheers,
-Sören

(I'm really eager to try that process out with 25P footage from the DVX using that wide anamorphic ad.)
