Slight quality loss

I seem to be having some slight quality loss from the camera to my computer. The footage looks great on the camera’s LCD and in the NLE capture window. However once I capture the footage, the colors are not as rich, the contrast is not as great, and it seems to make the image slightly soft. The image is still acceptable but it looks better before it was captured. Is this normal or is their a problem with my capture card or something else?

Camera: DVX100a settings were all 0.

NLE: Premiere Pro 2

Thanks

Computer monitors are not by nature good at showing video that hasn't been processed/color-corrected to be viewed on computer monitors.

Also, the LCDs on the cameras are usually set brighter and more saturated than "normal".

as genjerdan said - try to output it on a tv via your cameras firewire, there should be no difference in your original footage & captured footage

Well...like I said, the LCDs a usually factory-set to lie to you.

I did a little matching of mine against a production monitor and had to turn everything down on the LCD to get them close.

"Capturing" from a digital video camera like DVX100 to a computer is just a data transfer, there is no way the quality can change. "Capturing" is misleading anachronism from the days of analog video which had to be digitized, captured, to PC. There the quality of the card could make a difference. Modern PCs do not have capture cards, firewire is just a data transfer standard used between the camera and the PC.

A good PC monitor is usually of higher quality than LCD or TV and is capable of showing more colors. For that reason the relativelly low quality video signal seems slightly muted. Remember that is is meant to be shown on a TV set and judge the quality by connecting a TV to your editing system (using the camera PC->firewire to camera->video to TV).
