Slight choppiness in 24p

Does anyone else have this problem, I'm shooting in 24P and using the 1/50 shutter speed and no matter how slow I move the camera on pans I still get a slight choppiness in the video clip. I have to go to almost no movement before it goes away which defeats the reason for a pan.

I have 2 lenses I use primarily, L series 70-200 mm and 24-70mm.
I Have tried this at its widest being 24mm and still theres choppiness.

Is there a way to avoid this ?

I see other peoples videos with much faster pans in it and no choppiness.

Is there some setting I'm missing?

I don't see it in tilts, just pans.

Thanks

I don't have a solution, just an idea to try. Go to 1/40th shutter and do some panning tests. Stutter is usually because there's not enough motion blur to help the eye see it smoothly. Adding more blur with a slower shutter may help.

Yeah I've tried 40, and 50, I used to shoot only in 60 until I heard about 1/48 setting for 24p. I have always had this problem for some reason.

What CF cards are you using? Could be dropped frames from too slow of a write speed. The datarate increases when there is camera movement.

Hi,

I'm using ScanDisk Extreme CF card 60MB's 32 GB card.

Is that fast enough?

I used to use 30 MB's and had the same problem.

thanks.

have you shot 24p before ?

The leap down from 30 was suprising for me - now I feel sickly if I watch 60 - a year ago I couldnt see any of it

Keep those pans smooth and slow - 7 seconds for something to cross the frame is the 'rule'

Yes Morgan I have, I have an Panasonic HPX 300 and it also has 24P capability and it doesn't react the same way, NOT Even close. I will try your 7 second rule, however I have done these pans at a snails pace and I still see it, just a lot less. I will try and shoot an example later today.

Well Ive never shot 24p on a camera better than the EX1- it jerks on that but maybe less - so possibly dont know what it should really look like (film)

The EX1 is smooth sea sick with 50i so its certainly a charateristic of low FPS progressive

I would agree that the canons are a bit weird, maybe its something to do with the way the shutter refreshed (in a rolling manner)

your monitor could play too - CRT seem smoother than LCD but if you are doing side by side with the panny everything else equal it would be interesting to see..

Is the choppyness in playback on the camera or in post on your computer?

I find when I shot on the 5D that it looks smooth on the camera and then watching it in h.264 on the computer it looks kind of choppy.
I convert my h.264 files to ProRes 422 files and when I bring it into fcp it looks much smoother.

I see it in the monitor as I'm panning and although I convert to prores it is still there as well. It only happens on pans, Tilts are not a problem. I'v estopped doing it altogether to avoid it but from time to time I do a pan in hopes that I get a surprise, I don't. LOL
