I have seen sliders that videographers use. some used konova but the sliding back and forth is smooth but I always noticed there is a wobble to them. meaning, if you hold the plate in place and just wiggle that, there is a lot of play in it. ive seen a videog use on with a fuid head and the whole rig was flexing from this. so NO konova.

camera setup would have to hold max weight of D750 with a 28-70 2.8 AFS /105VR 2.8

what weaknesses are with these sliders. I just dont know what makes a good slider good and whats bad. they all look the same.

btw saw some use an oild for lubricating them. didnt notice what it was though. is it any WD40 kind of oil?

thank you for your time.

The top one is just a cheap chinese clone of the Konova.

The second two are both "Friction sliders" with their parts supplied by the same source - IGUS.

ANY slider as small (and cheap) as the Konova is going to wiggle when you flex it like that. That's using it wrong. You don't just throw the camera on it and slide it. It takes a steady hand and practice. Or you can get a Shark Slider that is much wider - and 5-times the price.

For under $200 and 4-feet long....you're not going to like what you get.

Hey Stewart, thanks for the reply

"For under $200 and 4-feet long....you're not going to like what you get."

what do you mean by 4 feet? I need 120cm. I havent settled 100% on the size I want but being new to video and asking photogs I think I may go down to 80cm/32" from the 120cm for convenience as 120cm is just too cumbersome IMO. I might not have room to set it up at times and it just too big to move around.

the commlite is out after seeing this video

I had crap CS from them in the past with slaves Ive bought so not going that way again.

ive seen and used that konova and that wiggle will drive me crazy so will have to do my research regarding that.

the kamerar looks very nice from this guys review. they have a MK2 but both are either in 60cm or 120cm.

I think though I may just go for the 120cm kamerar only because I like the steady wiggle free plate. I need hassle free gear that I wont have to adjust in the field to work.
thanks again.

I've not used the gear your looking at but I suspect you won't be happy.

The weight of your gear ( D750 with a 28-70 2.8 AFS /105VR 2.8) might be an issue and this is mentioned in the video review.

I'm in the same boat and the slider that I think is the best suited is the Kessler Pocket Dolly, but the cost is far far higher.

price doesnt equate to quality always. I can list tons of photography gear that is crap and WAY overpriced and gear that gives excellent quality for a lower price. I also know a pro videog who bought the edelkrone slider (that looks like the KPD you mention) and he said its crap. hes easy to sell to though and buys a lot of gear then sells from regret. and ive tried the konova in a few weddings and I cant believe they charge what they do for that. smooth, yes with pan but the wobble it has should be a crime. just like glidecam is considered great by many, an inexpensive monocam CF easily is the better choice today. flies better, adjusts/balances faster and easier ,carbon fiber strentgh, weighs less, less cumbersome, less money, hybrid monopod.

I would have loved a kamerar 80cm/32" slider but its either go long or find more alternatives.

My comment is based not on the premise that price=quality but rather from film-makers using the gear.

Plus , the way you can expand it's functionality.

Compare the cabled mess required to do time-lapse on a Konova to a Kessler.
Compare the flexing with anything but a lightweight rig on a Kamerar to Kessler.
Compare the noise of the motors to do parallax motion.

Yes, it's not "cheap" but I think the other gear is false economy on a component that will get a lot of use.

Im new to video so I dont see why some things are so expensive. like some ask why the hell is the nikon SB910 $550 when I can get an excellent ttl flash from yongnuo or shanny for $120. and I have 7 flashes and the yongnuo do their job well. no wonder tons of pros use them. mostly for off camera flash though.

I think what ill do is get the 47" kamerar and chop it down to 90cm and then make new 1/4"-20 threads for the feet.

the guy in the video seems to like it and seems to be competent from what I saw.

Well, reality set in; the Kessler was out of my price bracket :( and I wanted a slider, so I decided to purchase a 60cm Konova.

Scouring the web, I saw a new Konova product, the Auto Pan but it requires a 80cm slider
http://konovaphoto.com/best-selling/konovaautopan.html

I'm just starting out and I don't know how much use this will get. I'm thinking that it may be quite useful for interview situations.

How useful do others find this type of device?

cheers

I don't know that particular slider, but be aware that Konova has a terrible reputation when it comes to sliders - they wiggle and flex, and people are furious. Maybe this new one is better, but their past efforts in sliders were very poor, to say the least. YMMV.

Like everything, it's a trade-off between cost and quality.

But for now, I have the Konova (which I'll use with a DSLR).

The question I have is whether the Auto Pan is worth having?

cheers
