Slider or skater?

I need some help deciding between a skater-type device, like the Omni Tracker, or a slider--either a DIY version or the pocket dolly made by Kessler. I want something portable with relatively simple set up. A slider will satisfy most of my basic needs, I think, but I'd also like to be able to get some "curved" moves.

As I understand it, a slider will involve setting up the slider on either one stand, perhaps two, for support. The skater would require bringing a flat, level surface such as a tabletop on a set of saw horses or C stands. Either way I'm carrying some support structures.

For those who've used these devices, does one offer a particular advantage over the other in terms of functionality and ease of use?

Thank you

The slider is going to prove much more versatile. A skater dolly is great, but not practical in 95% of situations/surfaces. You can add some curvature to slider dolly moves by mounting the rail on a tripod head and panning the whole rail as you slide.

i just got the Pocket Dolly by Kessler with their Hercules head. i have the Miller Solo Vj legs so i can go extremely tall or extremely low. with their head you have a nifty little crane if you choose to use it that way. i really like the "crank" on the slider as well. you can really "crawl" at the slowest speeds with ease.

never used a skater but i do think the slider would be way more useful.
