Slave Time Code?

Any thoughts here?

Is it possible without FW on the AF100?

Am I looking at simul-rolling Free Run and using a clapper and/or shooting TC displays on each camera?

Not possible to actually sync them, no. HPX170 can only sync through firewire, and AF100 doesn't have that. AF100 syncs through LTC, and HPX170 doesn't have that. So, no, set the timecodes as close as you can get them on free roll and then yeah, shoot each other's LCD's...

You can sync two AF100s through the video output port -- it can be turned into an LTC timecode in/out port for purposes of sync'ing the freerun timecode.

This is why I love Pluraleyes even if you can't completely jam timecode - or if / when timecode drifts over the course of the day; you can still sync in post with ease.

record the LTC from af100 onto one of the channel of 170.
Final cut or Avid can read that Aux TC as Main TC.

good luck

Barry or Berk- could I get some more info, please?
What video out on the AF, how do you convert it to LTC, and into what on the 170?
Thanks!

LTC is basically a sound signal that contains TC information which can be carried via XLR cables
LTC output of AF100 wirelessly can be sent to the one of the XLR inputs of 170.

so you good to go.

for frame accuracy please check if the signal got delayed while sent wirelessly
i have done with sennheiser G2 series w/o any problem.

Keep your level LTC level at -12dbfs.
There might be little bleed to next channel on 170.
if you won't go with a double system it is wise to keep your sound recording on af100

Actually this may not work. The af100 doesn't continuously send tc. It only sends it when in a specific mode. You have to discontinue ltc in order to use it as a camera.

Doesn't the hmc150 do the same thing? You set master and slave sync through composite RCA port then disconnect cable and they should be synced.

Does anyone know if the AF sends a 23.98 or 29.97 timecode signal? We're prepping for a shoot with a Tascam HDR and can't seem to get it to jam unless it's set to 29.97, and even then it's roughly 5 frames off.

Barry- what mode does it work in? Or is it a moot point since it's not camera mode?

Berk- thanks for the (possible?) theory.

wbrock- I'll try composite cables tomorrow, question (for me) is will it work between AF and 170? (guess I'll try 170 to AF also), or is it an AVC thing?
What else do you have to do on the HMC for it to work?

And yes, TC frame rate would be a good thing to know...

When you go into the tc menu you can tell it to sync timecode by either becoming the "master" (in which case it will generate timecode and send it out the video output port) or the "slave" (in which case it will be able to read incoming timecode on its video output port).

But you have to exit the timecode-generating mode before you can use it as a camera.

I'm sorry it is still vague for me.
if this is the case why is there Master Mode? When u leave the TC mode camera will camera generate any TC?
will it be Free-Run TC?

if this is the case it is big bummer.

Klon
have u tried Barries suggestion? still can't get 24p-TC

The system is designed to be used in free-run timecode. It will synchronize its timecode preset to the other camera. You don't leave them connected as in a jam-sync system. You sync them up, disconnect, and go on your way.
