Artist: Slaughterhouse
Song: The One
Director: Rik Cordero
Production Company: Three21 Media - www.three21media.com
DP: Matt Workman - www.mattworkman.com

About 2 days after the manual exposure update, director Rik Cordero bought the 5DMKII and the day after he called me to DP a music video for him in Times Square for Slaughterhouse. I had been preparing for the new DLSR cameras and I purchased an Indie-Slider to test. This was the first video that I'd shot with the 5DMKII and the indie-slider. They both performed very well.

The hotel stuff was pretty standard, iso300-500 with Dedo, Source4s, Kinos, etc. The outside roofdeck exteriors however blew us all away when we turned the iso to 5000 and shot with almost completely available lighting. For those scenes we lit the two adjacent buildings with 2x source4s and then keyed the artist with a 4x4 kino through two layers of diffusion about 10' back. Amazing.

At this point we were using the Novatek Nikon adapter and I used a NIkon 50mm f1.8, Nikon 100mm f2.8, and a Nikon 28-70mm f2.8 zoom.

This months issue of SPIN Magazine (September2009) features and article on the director and has a photo of us using the 5DMKII and indie slider.

And Matt!!!!

You need to post this to YouTube and VIMEO so we can put links on our facebook page!

Thanks Man!

Great F'n Job!!!!!!

Nice puss! Great frontal light techniques!

The compressor is making the image a bit soft however, not doing the shots a huge favour..,

I love the song. And When I first saw the video on MTVjams I was shocked at how bad it looked when playing on my 60" plasma. I am glad you posted this in its true resolution, because the song rocks and I did not like the look of the video until now.

What ever MTV did to convert it broadcast (don't know if I'm saying that right) really takes away from the quality of the video. I am very happy you posted this.

Hey Guys,

Thanks. I've done about 10 more 5DMKII videos since this one so I've learned a few tricks about getting things to look better. There are some great de-grain programs as well for the 5000-6400 iso days.

RJJ: Yeah MTV/MTV2/MTV3 and BET have terrible compression. I'm pretty sure its a single pass MPEG2 based codec, ingested from a digabeta.

I recently shot a video for Fabolous feat. Jay-Z which is half RED and half 5DMKII which I've heard looked terrible on BET 106 & Park today. The quicktime is the best it will probably ever look.

Its online here as well:

Sidethought, I'm thinking of getting the ArriMMB1 and FF1 for my 5D but I'm not sure its really worth it. :bath:

Later,

Matt

The Fab video looks good on MTV. You did your thing with that one. Which parts were shot with RED? It's still amazing to me that a $2600.00 VDSLR can mix with $20,000 RED ONE.
