Slash my demo reel to leeetle pieces!

I'd go with 1:30 sec, upbeat song (with good drums and bass lines, jazzy style) and a 15 second voice over track at the end!

Why?

Who would put an up beat jazzy song on a doco about a memorial wall for example. People died for their country and you think this is a youtube freakin video!

What do you think the 15 sec VO should be?

O.K ...took a look at your second cut of your reel.

You want to sell your self as a doco cameraman / producer? / editor?/ director?...so I want to see and HEAR the drama of the doco.

Whats missing...audio!

Try mixing some of the live audio from the shots and some V/O on top of the music bed.

Make it impactful and chose drama, voice, mood..

Docos tell storys and record events ( for ever)

They need to move people and inform people.

Audio is a huge part of the story.

Good luck

ps. some great doco style graphics could be part of it maybe .

That's some good advice that I probably wouldn't have considered. Do you think that you should only put audio in for doc work, but not if most of your work is corporate stuff?

Audio is a huge part of any "film"

A show reel could maybe demonstrate that one knows how to use it effectively.

I agree, we are often looked at as multi task operators and I personally would want to know that you can cut a couple of scenes together and that you can provide good interview sound from the talking heads. Really depends on what your trying to sell, usually for us it's a jack of all trades but also a specialist that we need to sell ourselves as. Some lower third graphics on the docu work and graphics on your closing image is just another job you can put your skills out there for. Will check the second draft later today ;)

Ones reel does not have to entirely reflect ones own work.

Film making is collaborative and one can take advantage of that as well.

Being part of that collaboration is totally valid in my books.

I have seen some of your work XSVPro. I am sure your reel has a wow factor because it demonstrates all the elements of creative film media. Audio and visual.

Totally agree Shooter, my showreel coes from a time of doing it all myself but now I am far more a Camera OP and hopeful DP than an editor. I love the collaborative side of the business.

Thanks for the kind words Shooter (camera is back to default by the way)
