Shot with the DVX and the M2 with nikon 28mm and 50mm. First video with the M2, could have done more with the DOF but it was good practice.

View On Set Photos here

*I realize there is no narrative.

I liked it. Would have liked to have seen more SDOF, but still looked good. The footage looked soft though. Was that an intentional post effect? Or a result of the lenses?

I'm considering the M2, but I hear the G35 is close to being ready and I'm on the fence. I noticed in your production photos you had to turn your monitor upside down to view the image properly. For some reason, I thought the M2 flipped the image on it's correct viewing axis. But since the M2 doesn't flip the image for you, using the G35 seems easier as I don't like that the M2 needs a rail system.

How do you find it? Were there any issues that came up in using the M2? If so, what did you do to overcome them?

Hmm weird, video is not working for me. I get like a quitime logo with a question mark over it. The other videos you have play fine for me. Any reason?

It was put together well.
It may have caught my attention better if there had been more camera movement from the start. Hip hop needs movement continually. The camera needs to be part of the dance. (That's my oppinion, anyway).

Hey man, looks tight as usual

Only problem I have is the first minute or so... It's the same shots back and forth. Need some variation at the start.

I love the roof shots

STORYTELLER: The M2 stuff I shot came out soft because I am still learning how to use it. The softness is exaggerated in the web version. I am also not using cinema lenses, which would be the best.

The only 35mm adapter that has a flipped image is the PS Technic. The rods system is actually nice for when I get a follow focus and geared lenses.

The M2 has some ghosting issues in uncontrolled light situations. The new GG I hear fixes this. I used a lot of ND and kept the lenses as open as possible.

Adam/Lloyd: When we get the hand grips for the M2 it will allow for more handheld shots. I wish we had time to shoot more B-Roll, really really wish, but we barely had time to shoot the performances.

I agree that the vid is slightly repetitive, the next will have more Broll and rack focus to show off the DOF of the M2/M3.

thanks for comments.

I checked the coding. Try refreshing and re-opening.

Hey Matt,

When using a 35mm lens with the DVX..do you use the DVX to focus? or do you focus on the 35mm lens attachement? if you focus on the 35mm itself, is there any way to use a follow focus? or do you need film lenses for that?

Someone should develop a cheaper follow focus for these 35mm lenses :)

Thanks for the response-

One last M2 question:
Someone told me the M2 creates a low level hum that can be picked up in the location audio. Do you find this to be true?

Thanks again-

RMI: You focus with the DVX on the ground glass of the M2 (back focus) and then you use the lens to focus like you would with the dvx without the lens adapter.

We focused by hand w/o a FF. Redrock is coming out with a FF and a system to gear SLR lenses. You could always use pre-geared cinema lenses and a chrosizl FF if you had the money.

STORYTELLER: The M2 does have a little hum. We were not shooting sync/sound much and when we were there was music from the playback blasting.

If you are using an external recorder (DAT, another DVX, HD, etc.) for audio and decent quality mic's then you shouldn't have a problem. I mean wind, cars, general room tone, are much worse obstacles.

I don't shoot music videos. My purposes are purely for narrative with actors dialogue and I like to avoid ADR if I can. I'm also not rich so I'd like to be able to use the DVX (or HVX) in camera sound.

Sounds like this could be an issue for me (and others like me). I wonder if redrock is addressing this in future incarnations of their hardware?

You bring up a good point about the follow focus and geared lenses though. You'd need a rail system for those.

Thanks

You will want a rail system for G35 especially if your going to do anything handheld. And G35 is better then Mini35 as far as I'm concerned.

Is a rail system needed for the G35 though? If so, why? It doesn't look as though it needs the support for weight/balance issues. Is it for follow focus?

Its not needed but you will want one for many reasons.

The m2 does make a small amount of noise. So far as I can tell, only built-in mics pick it up, mostly through induction. Using a shock mount with a shotgun mic, I have not noticed it at all.

If you are using the built-in-mic, the audio will be sub-par anyway.
I have the M2, and it makes very tiny amount of motor noise. I think you'll be fine if your booming.
As far as the sharpness goes...I have had MUCH sharper results that I am very happy with. I was initially worried about the sharpness before I received the adapter, as well. Much to my surpise, after using it, it is as sharp as anything that is listed on the G35 demo page...especially with the new ground glass! It's unbelievable!
I have never used the G35 myslef...only seen their demos, so I am not comparing. Just wanted to assure some people who wondered about the performance of the M2...it is very sharp and grainless.

First off, I guess you just can't have a rapper without a Hummer any more, right?! Heh, ok, now for the "review". I hate posting all the things I found to be negatives, but that's how people hone their craft right? Anyway, I'll start with the positives:
I loved the look that the M2 created, most of the track work was great and fit well with the video, most of the colorization looked great, and heck... I was able to watch a rap video all the way through!
Ok, the first thing that I didn't like was the (in my opinion) over-use of diffusion within Magic Bullet. That is what created the additional softness that StoryTeller32 was referring to, I believe.
Second was the guy with the red hat! His hat just created lots of blockiness.
Next, I thought the fading in the middle between shots kind of lost some of the structure of the video. It may not have necessarily been the fading, but rather the fact that it was just back and forth between two shots.
The grading effect near the end was a bit heavy.
Lastly, and I know this is probably obvious, but you can see a photographer in the lower left hand corner of one of the "shooting up at the roof" shots.
Overall, the video had good flow, an enjoyable look to it, and the sequence of shots was mostly really nice.

And there you have my opinion! Hope it helps in one way or another!
