Skyline

In the sci-fi thriller Skyline, strange lights descend on the city of Los Angeles, drawing people outside like moths to a flame where an extraterrestrial force threatens to swallow the entire human population off the face of the Earth.

Seems like they're pushing it as a special effects film. It's by the same director of alien vs predator: requiem... which I was never curious about nor saw. On the website they push the visual effects team and their credentials.

While it seems cool, I feel it may be another 2012. Also the only original aspect to this is that the ships are some sort of giant vacuums sucking up people... cool, but not a big hook if you ask me...

The trailer looks really good actually. Independence Day meets District 9.

But yeah AVP2 was sugarcoated shi*, with the sugarcoating being the gore requested by everyone after AVP1 and the shi* being the same lack of good writing, directing and balls.

Sometimes, the lack of R-rating can make a movie bad, but that doesn't mean giving a movie R-rating will make it good.

Based on this trailer, I'll keep an eye on Skyline. But after AVP2, I want to hear some good word of mouth from people I trust.

The newest trailer didn't impress me. Still looks like a visual effects show.

Show me some story, then maybe I'll rethink my statement.

What's it about, other than aliens attacking? Fine, they have cold freaky ways to attack, but aside from that how's this any different? (this is Hollywood, why am I even asking?)

I'll Redbox this one... only because I'm a FX junkie. But based on the dialog in the trailer, my hope aren't that high.

That gives me a bit more hope though. Hopefully it's the way of the future. No more studios, just distributors. I wish...

Plus they seem to agree that AvP was a mess. So maybe it's a case of too many hands in the cookie jar.

Saw the trailer again today... I dunno... looks like a film that's just trying to be 'cool'.

Maybe it's the way they're trying to sell it, but I haven't seen an ounce of story revealed yet. So what happens? I get it, aliens attack, but so what? Are they just trying to escape one building or something?

Trying to escape from one building could actually be pretty cool if done right. But I'm with you on the rest.

More and more really bad reviews keep hitting the web for this, which roundly condemn the terrible screenplay. I read up on the writers and I guess they are friends of the directors who also work in visual effects. I think perhaps if the filmmakers had taken a few hundred thousand dollars of the ten million dollar budget and hired a real writer instead of their buddies down the hall, a better movie may have resulted. Of visual effects artists turned directors, the only guy who's made a good film is Neil Blokamp, and he had the good sense to hire an actual writer, even if she did have few credits. Contrary to legend, Blokamp DID have script, even if he improvised freely on set.

Hell, I'da written it for them! :|

I did not know that about Blomkamp. I admire him even more now that I know he hired a real writer instead of clinging to the writer-director-Hollywood-god fantasy.

Yeah I'm not surprised it's getting horrible reviews.

But let me gueeesss... it's going to make a lot of money...

Bagels and lox! I guess I'm the only one who saw this? I went in with low expectations, and was underwhelmed.

It's like a poor man's War of the Worlds strung together with a bunch of Video Copilot tutorials. And they never leave their original location throughout the whole film! There's no journey, no character growth, no real cool battles with the aliens. It's insufferable.

10,000 straight-to-video films just went, "Whycome this turkey made it to the big screen and we didn't?"
