Skip Bleach Bypass Look

Does anyone here know how to achieve the skip bleach bypass look (Saving Private Ryan, Traffic) either in camera or with Vegas color correction? I would like to try this look on some footage that I shot for my feature "The Mind's Eye."

Thanks,

Rick

Re: Skip Bleach Bypass Look

Well, in bleach bypass, the contrast increases and saturation decreases. So, you could use color curves to increase the contrast by steepening the slope of the curves and drop the saturation. Some people like to composite a B&W layer with a color layer, but I'm not sure that really gets you any further than the contrast and saturation adjustments.

To achieve bleach bypass in digital.

Import your footage into your compositing program. Make a copy of it. Set the top layer to be black & white and set the transfer mode to overlay. Voila! bleach bypass.

Additionally put the two layer into the same "folder" and tamper with the gamma value (so that it affects both layers) in order to get some of those mids up cause the footage might go a bit dark.

In bleach bypass, what you're essentially doing is not washing away the silver halides that are incorperated into the film. This leaves both the color dye clouds and the solid silver halide blacks.

I wonder if you could approach video the same way and get a similar effect?

Oh...dur...I just read the above post and realised that I'm one step behind.

Re: Skip Bleach Bypass Look

Putting a color layer over a black and white and setting the top layer to dodge also has a nice effect.

Re: Skip Bleach Bypass Look

Actually, using multiply on the top layer can work either. Since it's a bleach BYPASS, there is no need to call it a skip... Skipping Bleach Bypass would be just the same as normal developing...

Re: Skip Bleach Bypass Look

Check out Magic Bullet. It comes with a bleach bypass pre-set. Works GREAT!
