Description from Vimeo:
Our contribution to the Blue Tomato "Five on Flat" video contest. Written in 2 hours, shot in 5 hours, edited in 18 hours.

Tricks: Nollie Heelflip, Pop Shuvit, 360Flip, Bs Flip, Switch Frontfoot Impossible

Talent: Norbert Weitenbacher
Cinematography/Editing/Compositing/Sounddesign: Stefan Huber

Shot on a Sony FS700 with Samyang Cine 35mm f1.4, Pentax 50mm f1.4, Sony E 16mm f2.8 + Ultrawide adapter, and a Nikon 80-200 f 2.8 plus Speedbooster.

Audio recorded on a Rode NTG-2 + Blimp and sourced from freesound.org

I wanted to do something different than just filming 5 Tricks and be done with it, so i came up with the idea to do it in Slowmo (what an idea, beeing a FS700 owner - LOL), but also while it is raining. In the end it didn't rain at all, the weather was just overcast and cold - so i added the rain in post (which i would have done anyway)...

Would love to hear some Feedback :)

That was great. Did you have some type of rain slicker on your FS700. Make me want to shoot some skateboard rain stuff, except it does not rain in Los Angeles. LOL.

Thanks! Some shots were clearly inspired by your "against the sun" clip! LOL i guess it was the first time we hoped for rain when going out skateboarding - as i've written above, it didn't rain unfortunately, so i didn't need my "grip head to cardellini clamp to umbrella construction". I'm rarely filming in bad weather (snow is fine without one), so i didn't have much use for a real rain cover yet...

That is a good example of talent. I don't even care much for what technology was used while I was watching.

Agreed everything looked great. The ony thing I would maybe change is the rain. I have never added rain in post but if there was a way to randomize the rain drops that would help. The drops were too symmetrical and took me away from paying attention to your top notch shooting skills. Great work, cheers!

Thanks Carlos, much appreciated!

Thanks for watching, stoked you like it!

Funny that you mention that, because the raindrops are actually randomized to some degree (size, opacity, DOF). What bugs me a too, is the exact same shape of every drop - though it may not get noticed unless you watch it again and again, it makes the piece less perfect to me...

I was fooling around a lot with the different values - i came up with two options:
Either making the drops really realistic, meaning smaller drops, more motion blur plus a little more variation in size (so that the normal viewer doesn't even notice that it was done in post)...
...or the route i decided to go, to make the drops clearly visible, and a bit unrealistic in terms of gravity, wind direction and sharpness, and therefore gain more of the "WTF" moment. - That's what i was thinking...

Very nice. The opening shots sell the idea that it's all shot in the rain…but too bad you couldn't wet the pavement down which would have sold the effects even to pixel peepers like us (who were told the rain was post fx). I think the average viewer won't pick up the rain being faked unless they really look hard at it.

What did you use to create the rain? Very interested in improving my own weather effects rather than using rain or snow stock footage! I know a bit about Particular II, but haven't tried rain.

Thanks! haha that would have been great, bringing a garden hose and flooding the streets of Innsbruck was out of the question though :)

this video walks one more or less through everything regarding the raindrops:

The workflow in general was Editing and Sounddesign for around 2 or 3 clips, then replacing the single clips with AE comps, first Grading the footage and afterwards adding the rain-particlesystem for every single clip - DOF, size of the raindrops, transparency, motion blur, gravity, wind, particle count adjusted to match the footage and the lens originally used.
The speed-ramped shots were a bit different...

would you have any recommendations for a good sound library with impacts, swooshes - all kinds of different sounds would be great... i was told the FCPX sound-effects are pretty nice, i suppose one can't get those without the purchase of FCPX? or something similar to those?

i had some discussion about the "Soundeffects only" direction i went - most of the people nowadays are either on an iPhone or iPad these days so i believe it was kind of a mistake to not watch it on my phone before releasing it? i can hear most soundeffects, but not all of them, and not as clear as i hear them on my stereo speakers in the office...
