Skateboading shot with DVX and cut FCP + magic Bullet

Hi all,
just finished my small clip for friend. Just for fun, and just wana share with my work. Let me know what ya all think. Link is here : http://www.briksound.com/skatingvideo.mov
Just to let you know, color corection all manual, just used my eye creativati, and flow with a music. Also in begining, i used motion for animating graphics. and i compressed with .h-246...thanks

nice. kinda slow at the beginning, but it seems like what is missing is vocals for your music. If arent going to have dialogue, id have vocals to keep it from sounding like you have just a continuous loop of music to break the monotany of the whole thing. Just a suggestion.

the only real thing i have a problem with *pet peeve* is the effects and titles going over your bars. if the film is 16x9, make it 16x9 and dont let the effects skirt over your edges. This is quickly fixed with either a mask for the effects or just some simple bars made in photoshop or something. It adds to the effect of being a little more cinematic and personal and less like mtv.

am i sounding harsh? No harshness intended, just some criticism is all. Very respectable video. May I ask what it is for? Personal endeavor or something for someone else?

not harch..its good when you can hear some other side of view point, so next time you do something you try to see the thing you do from diferent points of view and make it super best.. Thanks..No its just for a friend, and for me, i like doing it for fun, so i just go shoot and have fun skating or watever, and having fun while i do it... I have question, i know i should not aked in this section, but, well, like you said, make it 16x9well, that what the problem is, i dont know how..i know there is way to remove those letterbox lines and make my videos 16x9.. can someone explain how to? the way i work now with videos, i shot them with letter box menu on, capture video as ntsc regular...and output them regular...were is the proses starts to make my video without that leterbox... thanks alot for responsing..

Hey man,
Your video wasn't bad and all, and I'm a skateboarder myself, and I enjoyed it on the whole. However, I did have a few issues, maybe it's just me being a skateboarder and all, but if what you were going for was som dramatic entertainment skateboarding wise, it was very lacking. First off the often repition of the tricks, and the editing of the tricks seemed out of place, and the ending few tricks which should be the most impressive seemed very rehashed from earlier in the video. Maybe it's just my take on things, but I think if you put some more effort into going to real street spots, and getting really impressive tricks, that might make a more interesting video.
On a side note, the music really kind of bugged me through the video and didn't help the dramatic effect of the video (if that's what you were going for). Although it REALLY wasn't my type of music, I think you might be able to find something that had a little more feeling to it to keep people interested.
Filming wise, the video was pretty well shot, and I'm not sure how much you know about skateboarding or skate videos, but check some out and see how they work. You've got an impressive tool that is capable of making some really killer work. Check out Chris Greider's work on this forum, he's taking the DVX to skateboarding, which is still widely uncharted territory.
I hope I didn't come off too harsh, but I think it could've been really awesome, and for me it just wasn't there.
Take care, man.

Keep tight more established shots. Some are way too far away. I have filmed skating for close to 10 years and still have challenges because you can't predict Skateboarding. Have fun.

I agree with a lot of the things from the last post. One thing that adds a lot to skateboarding videos is that the footage is filmed on the streets, and it's really crazy because sometimes you see things that you would never see at a skatepark. I've seen a lot of skateboarding videos throughout my days and there's some by big companies which just don't get it right for some reason. But maybe its because the music sometimes doesn't sync really well with the videos, it's as if they just picked a random song and put it on there. Some little thing also, is that in some of the clips you kind of focused on getting your friend on the video, but neglected to show what he can do with the skateboard. Filming for sports such as this one is a little different than normal filming, because the subject of the movie isn't your friend, its the board. so you have to pretty much have the board always on the screen.
I think that one of the companies that makes really good skateboarding videos is Zero Skateboards, they actually get the music right, it just fits in with the video, unbelieveably, in one of their movies they even use Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive", and it fits in really good.
Other than that, that was extremely good... I really liked the way you edited it and I think you can make some really good videos later on.

i liked the begining

also, what chrislyon said, i film in 16x9 and when i do effects that will go over the letterbox, i just crop it, it only takes a second to do, if you crop the bottom and top by 10.5 its perfect

dudes..

dudes..

well, i just do it for fun, for a friend, not profesional, just a hobby for me, and hobby for skater...and that dude not good , comparing to pros, ofcourse they got budged, and board sponsors, and i got nothing from it, but enjoyement and thanks from friend, and critizm from you..by the way, it took me only couple hours to cut it, and couple hours to color correct. so this is fast, easy work... anyways, thanks for interest and your thoughts, and i more than welcome to hear more...

another tip for improvement is to include a journey. even if it is subliminal. most skateboarding videos stay away from pipes and courses just to get some scenerey in the video. A change in setting to get people to stay with you. Again, just for future reference.

Nice stuff. Fun. I liked the misfire stuff, the CC wasn't my taste but whatever blows your hair back.

As far as mixing aspect ratios and effects going over the bars....I like it. I don't know why people get all pissy about that stuff. I thought it looked cool. I don't care about what people's rules are. I thought the stuff that was over the matte looked good. I'd keep it.

As far as the shots go. they were cool but you need more. Get a filter for your lens and shoot closer and while moving. It'll add way mare value to your shots.

-keep it up.

i liked the shots through the rear vision mirror, they make for good cutaways. Also the was one close up shallow dof close up that i thought was particurly juicy. try working a few more shots like that in.
