Sizzle Reel...?

Some days I feel like I just crawled out from under a rock...

I just heard the term 'sizzle reel' yesterday in regards to Zak's awesome one for Prodigi's film. I then google and find out it's a super common thing. Now that i think about it, I've seen a ton of these on major films (Braveheart, LOTR, etc) I just thought of them as 'BTS Highlights/Interviews'.

So here's the question: why? Beyond the cool factor and that it could be fodder for the DVD...do they help in the biz aspect? Who actually demands to see one? I'm prepping for a feature later this year and am trying to see if a 'sizzle reel' is a nice-to-have or must-have (to plan on how good of BTS stuff I need shot of my efforts, whether to film sit-down interviews, etc).

Thanks for feedback!

We never really used our sizzle reel (which we called our Behind the Scenes teaser) aside from generating awareness of the film before we had a chance to cut our teaser trailer. When "selling" the film to people we've used the teaser, which I believe is more effective.
