Size of files for internet viewing?

This might be a post question, sorry if it's in the wrong spot.

I'm having a ***** of a time compressing a short I've completed. It's 10minutes long, and I'll be damned if I can get a nice image and a small file. What size file should I expect for a 10 minute show? I've done test after test. The best looking test was an mp4, the resolution was perfect, yet the size was 72megs. I think this is excessive, let me know.

I use Final Cut 4, and have Compressor(tested that-no idea how to work it well).

Any tips or even better instructions on how to make quality movie files with good resolution?

I have a sequence with the shutter at 1/250, and at the lower end compression the cool staccato effect looks like crap... any help appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Size of files for internet viewing?

a recent rated WM9 as slower but better image than qtime.

it really depends on the viewer you are targetting. if you expect hundreds of people then a 72MB file will give you extrmem bandwidth problems soon. if you only want a customer to watch it...go ahead and let him download it.

10 minutes i guess you can get a really good image with about 20-25MB on a WM9 file.
a good choice to allow smooth playback is giving the viewer a download option. that way they do not have to wait for streaming packets....(that is for cutomers mostly due to copyright issues this option is not good for other clips)
