Single PCMCIA

Just to let everyone we're in beta on a single slot PCMCIA to USB with support for P2 cards on Macs (universal). Price will be around $160 and we hope to ship by October 1st.

What type of response is required? I'm letting the community know there was a problem, and my company is working to address it. Right now the hardware is in place (although we are still working on the casing) and we're testing the software side. It will be universal though.

Sweet. Would be better if it were August 1st... but better to take the time to make the right product. I just think the first entry into this market will scoup up a lot of the market for this type of device... Thanks for sharing !

USB is for mouse and keybord, not professional video. I would be much more interested Firewire, SATA, or express card adaptor... but I guess you gotta crawl before you can walk.

I'm big time pro firewire, but my iBook, the new MacBooks, and as far as I understand it the 15inch MacBook Pros only have one FW-400 port. These however have two usb2 ports, so personally I think they're trying to go cross-platform and not take up the sole firewire port on the systems.

Wouldn't USB be substantially slower for offloading cards than firewire?
I understand not wanting to take up the only firewire port though.
Best would be for it to have both ports. Is that possible?

So we've had one person say USB is only for mice and keyboards and one person say that USB is going to be slower... guys, USB 2.0 is 480 Mb/s and Firewire is only 400 Mb/s... Yes, I know it's more likely to have something already on the bus (ie: keyboard and mouse), but they can't possibly take up that much bandwidth... I'm guessing you'll still be left with around 400 Mb/s.... Besides, it's likely that people have a spare USB port (or spot on a hub) to keep a PCMCIA card reader plugged in all the time, but less likely to have a spare Firewire hookup... Plus, as was stated, the MacBook Pros only have one Firewire hookup... this device leaves that free to hook up the camera or an external drive...

Excellent! This is the kind of thing that will make P2 work for me one of these days. Now if somebody else other than Panasonic will start building the P2 cards to get the prices down, life will be good.

I'm no expert, but I have heard people say things like what David said above, that despite the transfer rate it is a slower portal for downloading video.
I would just say examine the issue carefully before putting your eggs in the wrong basket.

the p2 store is usb and offloads at about a gig a minute to a 17" mac book pro w/ 1gig of ram. I can't imagine if firewire would be substantially faster for this application.
