Single PCMCIA

I really feel like I need the option to offload straight from the P2 card to the laptop via the pcmcia slot. The new Macs have the expresscard slot, not the pcmcia card slot, so you can't pop the P2 in to offload. Is that what you're asking?

yes, would be nice if it was all connections, not just Expresscard. And to Steve , switching your system out there just because of a maybe 1 month wait seems drastic to me , like he said, grab a powerbook and stay mac.

Thanks for the advice Cynic. I'm relatively new to this and slightly overwhelmed by all the technology decisions to be made when the pros and cons seem so closely balanced sometimes.

Then dealing with the WIN to Mac, as easy as it may be for some people, is inconvenient to me. I prefer to stick to a format, (Mac) of course, and never worry about any compatibility issues. Be patient, in 1 week i should know whats up with the beta program and the product should be great!

Yeah, what you cited there definitely seemed like one of the 'pros' for going w/ the mac. One of the cons was the lack of a mature or officially supported DVRack-like app. But that too seems to be developing. Another con (at least for going with the latest Mac's) is that a number of important app's are not yet compatible w/ the intel Mac's (like the Adobe Creative Suite, including after effects). Supposedly they run on BootCamp but with a performance hit and no guarantees. At least that's what I've read....

I never got the whole after effects thing, what would you make use of that for that Apple's Final Cut Studio cant provide? Im just curious, since ive never used after effects.

BTW, photoshop can lag, but it runs well enough with 1920 x 1080 files for me.

That's good to know. Thanks

I'm not so sure that I would need it to accomplish what I need, but I would like to learn to use it so that I'd have the skill if I were asked to use After Effects in some situation in the future. It's good to know, though, that you've found you have all the tools you need in Studio.

between Final Cut, DVD Studio Pro, Motion, Soundtrack/Garageband, Compressor, (still trying to figure out shake) theres nothing that i wanted to do that i couldnt so far. Of course Photoshop is a neccessity.

Yeah, but some of us (like myself) have logged far more hours on After Effects, and while I appreciate what Motion and Shake can do, and their potential, I find it much easier to keep working in After Effects than to take the time to relearn everything the Motion/Shake way...

Then its up to whether working with the trouble of Windows is worth being able to continue using After Effects for you.

Actually, since my current system is one of the last PowerPC desktops and laptops, by the time I get around to upgrading, I should be in the clear...

Now if only this single PCIMCIA to USB reader would come out so I don't have to ingest via the camera every time I shoot on the HVX...

For a newbie like me, the apparent close call between two plausible lines of reasoning like this is what makes it so difficult to know which way to go. I guess you ultimately just dive in, make the best of the tools in the platform/s you choose (and ultimately become a partisan for what you're used to, I suppose).

Its coming captain, its coming. I will guess late november, early december, but i know what you mean, i have to use the camera as my P2 reader now as well. and when its got the M2, Baseplate, Rails, Mattebox, Follow focus and Mic attatched to it, lugging it to dump the card is not that fun, but its the process and i dont mind

Doubt that would work, i mean the P2 card is a storage card, but its its own beast, not just dumb storage like SD and what not, its smart storage. So i dont think it would be recognized by that thing.
