"A Linux device helped legendary independent filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi, Desperado, Spy Kids, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and others) win the race with ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) to create the first movie ever to use a digital format supporting full-bandwidth RGB. Rodriguez's Sin City, which opens April 1, was shot in Dual Link, or "4:4:4" format, and transferred between tapes and hard drives using SpectSoft's Linux-based RaveHD DDR (digital disk recorder)."

Did anyone know?....

...According to Variety, Quentin Tarantino got paid exactly $1 to film a scene in Sin City. Robert Rodriguez co-directed the rest of the Dimension Films drama with Frank Miller, who created the graphic novel series. Tarantino filmed a scene in the final segment featuring Clive Owen, Benicio Del Toro and Brittany Murphy.

While it seemed Tarantino was working cheap, he actually got the better of the deal between himself and Rodriguez. After all, Tarantino paid Rodriguez $1 to compose the score for "Kill Bill Vol. 2."

Tarantino went to Austin, Texas, to shoot the scene and because he wanted to sample the digital filmmaking techniques Rodriguez used on "Sin City."

While his cast got paid more than Tarantino, Rodriguez put together a strong ensemble for a reasonable budget. Michael Clarke Duncan was a late addition to a cast that included Bruce Willis, Josh Hartnett, Mickey Rourke, Nick Stahl, Jessica Alba, Elijah Wood, Carla Gugino, Jaime King and Marley Shelton.

DAAAAMMMNN!! That's cool. This is a must see for me now. ~reservoir~

what a lineup of stars. and they probably all went for $1 and now take shares in the ticketsales.....

This is such a dimension films movie.. can't wait to see it, and cant wait to see the DVD with Robert's Filmaking 101 part 4..... love to see what his Troublemaker studios looks like now.

Robert has turned into a little bit of a "lucas". After getting kicked out of the Directors guild, and setting up his own studio making films on green screens, he does seem to have to answer to many studio execs anymore. Lets hope he doesn't have Jar Jar in his next movie.

right, i think think it was because frank miller WASNT in the dga...that he could not take a director credit next to RR...so RR said bye bye....

fricken unions...

I thought that Episode 2 and 3 were both shot using the HDCAM SR codec?

which has full 4:4:4 colour space...

I'd think that to get really good keys from all the green screen work they would be using a full colour grid...

just makes sense to me.. but I could be wrong..

Check that link. I believe Episode 2 was shot HDCAM and only 3 was HDCAM SR. But Rodriguez's film is the first to actually be released. He beats Lucas by about a month.

I'm going to the Sin City regional premiere on the 31st! RR is going to be there, along with Frank Miller and a few 'special guests'...most likely some of the actors. I got a VIP pass!! MUAHHAHAHA!

Yep....RR has got some of the biggest Ka-Hoon-Eys in Hollywood. He told the DGA to F' off!! Not the other way around!! Hollywood is soooo crazy about guilds and freakin' unions that if two people are not in a particular organization *together*, they can't "technically" work together. Absolutely Crazy!! So yeah....RR resigned.

Can't wait to see Sin City. ~reservoir~

Of some interest, Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Trainspotting) new movie, "millions" was shot with a VariCam. I don't know when it is coming out, but I look forward to seeing it.

Kind of a bummer RR switched to something else... Honestly, I feel this way irregardless of my constructive criticism of the VariCam in other threads. The guy practically put that camera on the map as a real filmmaking tool. Sigh.

Re: DGA... I think I remember hearing at the time Kill Bill was shot, that both Rodrigez and Tarantino turned in their guild cards to shoot that movie as well since the DGA did not have a provision for multiple directors signed to a single film... the media comments at the time were that they would resume membership after the movie was complete... that is, unless they co-directed other films as a team, then who needs a guild anyways?

I don't remember wanting to see a movie as much as I want to see sin city, from the second I saw the first promo
I like robert rodriguez, not only because of the films he make but mostly because of his attitude towards film making, he still likes to hold the camera, he edits everything at home and he's just having fun with it

he did get an amazing cast for this movie

No disrespect hommie, but we only WISH Robert Rodriguez , Lucas, & Camp used the Varicam. That would bring Panny soooo much more respect and credibility than they *already* have. Sadly, everyone's favorite Evil Empire of the electronics biz *SONY* is getting the credit. They are actually using the Sony CineAlta HDW-F900 HD Digital Camcorder.

However, I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before Panasonic ownz the low end, the middle, and the high end of 24P digital cams. Hell, they put 24P on the map. Jan, what do you think about this? How do you feel about the CineAlta's prescence and market share compared to the ever growing Varicam?

Here are the pics of the Varicam. It closely resembles the CineAlta so I can understand if people were to see it and get confused thinking it was in fact the Varicam.

Haha, I used to work for Spectsoft a long time ago. Believe it or not Jason, who developed the RaveHD is only in his mid 20's. He's one smart ash dude. That's cool to see his company growing.

Can't wait to see Sin City!!
