simplified notations

Can we start using more simplified notations?

"50mm" implies 50mm in m43 format.
"50mm/35" implies 50mm equivalent in 35mm format.

"50mm/2.6x" implies 50mm equivalent in m43 format after 2.6x 1:1 cropping.
"50mm/2.6x/35" implies 50mm equivalent in 35mm format after 2.6x 1:1 cropping.

Why don't we just use the focal lengths and know what format we're talking about. Someone posts 50mm in this forum I can visualize it, in 7D forum I can visualize it, in 5D forum I can visualize it...it's not that big a deal.

"50mm/2.6/35/M626/75mph/I45/M" implies a 50mm equivalent in 35mm format after 2.6x 1:1 cropping, mounted to the hood of my Mazda 626, going 75mph down Interstate 45 on a Monday.

Seriously, though, there are just so many things wrong with that post, I wouldn't guess where to start.

A 50mm lens is a 50mm lens no matter what camera you put it on, no matter what country you're in, no matter what planet you're on. ;)

Out of curiosity, which Micro4/3 lens would you describe as the "50mm/2.6x - implies 50mm equivalent in m43 format after 2.6x 1:1 cropping"? j/k

I think these two are good notations.
1. "50mm" implies 50mm in m43 format.
2. "50mm/35" implies 50mm equivalent in 35mm format.

The other two notations... let me tweak a bit.
3. "50mm/2.6x" implies 50mm in m43 format & 2.6x 1:1 cropping applied. i.e. it's equivalent to 130mm in m43 format.
4. "50mm/35/2.6x" implies 50mm equivalent in 35mm format & 2.6x 1:1 cropping applied.

Seriously... wouldn't it be much easier to say, "that particular scene was taken in 50mm/2.6x"? That tells the scene was taken with 50mm lens and 2.6x 1:1 cropping.

usage: the scene was taken in ???.

e.g.
pancake -> 20mm in m43
pancake/2.6x -> 56mm in m43
pancake/3.9x -> 78mm in m43

e.g.
50mm -> 50mm in m43
50mm/2.6x -> 130mm in m43
50mm/3.9x -> 190mm in m43

e.g.
28mm/35 -> 28mm in 35mm
28mm/35/2.6x -> 28 * 2.6 mm in 35mm
28mm/35/3.9x -> 28 * 3.9 mm in 35mm

Some primes have popular f-number. So it can be simplified, too.

50.4mm -> 50mm f/1.4
50.8mm -> 50mm f/1.8
20.7mm -> 20mm Panny pancake f/1.7
17.8mm -> 17mm Oly pancake f/2.8
14.5mm -> 14mm Panny pancake f/2.5

I think these two are good notations.
1. "50mm" implies 50mm in m43 format.
2. "50mm/35" implies 50mm equivalent in 35mm format.

This alone makes no sense to me. 50mm in m43 format? That doesn't mean anything. 50mm is 50mm is 50mm. Are you saying a 50mm lens on m4/3rds? Ok so that's 100mm/35 by your notation or is it 25mm/35 by your notation? Very unclear. Here's the easy way to say this: I put a 50mm lens on my m4/3rds camera. The end. Everyone should know that means it's a 100mm FOV vs a 35mm full frame still camera.

I'm not sure what is accomplished with this proposed notation.

If I shot 1080 footage with a 20 mil pancake on GH2 wide open with extra-teleconversion 'ON' I would simply state,
20mm/f1.7,ETCx2.6. That's all anything needs to know about the lenses and focal multipliers used.
