sorry if its been answered before (ive looked, honest!) but ive never had a decent tripod and have been rying to research for about a week now what is the best buy..

important for me is compact and light..

i have a canon xm2 (gl2)

i've found a scond hand Gitzo G1227 Mountaineer MK2 Carbon statief that i'm thinking about but..

dont know is this tripod meant mainly for photography rather than video?? is there a big difference?? would it suit my needs???

and with a tripod like this can i just go ahead and buy whatever head i want, if i was to buy a manfrotto 701rc2 (thinking about it) will it fit and do i need any other attachments (QR plate) or anything else for these to go together??

Thanks a lot.

That tripod does not come with a head, which is important to have. And you need to have a fluid head at that, or you won't be able to get smooth pan/tilt. As for light-weight, carbon fiber can be pretty light but is much pricier than aluminum. The other thing to look at is a bowl, which allows you to level the head without having to adjust the legs.

There are some great entry-level tripod/head combos from Bogen Manfrotto, Davis and Sanford, and Libec. Any of those will come with a quick-release plate.

What's your budget, by the way?
