Simple question

I have Premiere Pro CS4. Will a GTX 285 help/work? I know just any video card will "work" but will it help with CS4 or only CS5?

It will work fine with CS4, but you won't see any of the accelerated effects like in CS5. So no - no big boost with CS4.

CS4 (in windows) does leverage the card, so it'll make a difference, especially in things like external video preview and GPU-rendered FX. But there's timeline acceleration, too, and it'll help.

But it doesn't have the Mercury Playback Engine, like CS5. That's night and day different.

You mean the upgrade to CS5 from CS4 vs. buying CS5 straight? I don't think there's a difference, except how much you pay.

Would you recommend upgrading from CS4 or buying the full version.

I wonder if I can get close to 400$ for my CS4 version. That would help alleviate the cost of CS5.

- If you have CS4, upgrade.
- If you dont have CS4, get the full version.

You install a full version and upgrades from the *same* install discs, so there is *no* difference between them. It the very same code/version/functionality/etc that gets installed. :)

I'm just wondering if there is a catch about it.. If I go the upgrade route for cheaper, can I upgrade the "upgrade" when CS6 comes out?

EDIT: took a chance last night on eBay with a 220$ EVGA GTX 285 - hopefully things will fly with the i7 920...

Yes... I went from After Effects to CS3 to CS4 to CS5 sitting next to me waiting to install. All my versions of CS have been bought as upgrades. There is no limit to how many upgrades can be upgraded. Once you buy into Adobe CS, you only need to buy upgrades from there on out.
