Simple Question about HDD

Perhaps this is a tad obvious, but being a newcomer I'm going to ask it. Instead of dropping untold thousands on an FS-100 or a stack of 8GB P2s, is it not possible to just stick a laptop to the HVX-200 through a FireWire800 connection and have it stream the video directly to the laptop's hard drive as its shooting?

What about a lone, powered external hard drive instead ?

I would imagine quality concerns would come into place, so what are they ? I'm looking at shooting 1080i/24p or 720/24p...

Thanks all, I've learned a ton reading the threads on this site.

A drive by itself doesn't have the "smarts" to handle the video, and the camera doesn't have the "smarts" to stream directly to an ordinary drive... so you need a drive connected to a laptop running capture software, or a specialized drive (like the fs100) that has a built in computer to handle the capture.

Cool, thanks for the quick replies BTW.... so speaking hypothetically, would Final Cut Pro on a MacBook Pro be enough? Maybe I'm just confused seeing as how people seem to refer exclusively to the FS-100 on this board.

And concerning DV Rack, yea, i finally went and saw what it does, and well, it does everything i need. so cool.

Actually, there's a huge amount of discussion of direct capture to FCP. FCP on a MBP should be fine!

In the meantine, you can go directly from the camera to a hard drive by copying from a P2 card
(see pp. 84-84 in the manual.) That's what I'm doing and I brought the footage
into Final Cut Pro on Sunday.

I used one get around. The manual says that you can go directly from camera
to hard drive via Firewire but I had difficulty so I connected the camera and
Lacie hard drive to a Belkin hub in between them and that (I don't know why)
worked.

Well my idea behind all this is that I want to avoid the hassle of having an assistant lock and load P2 cards continuously while shooting... i.e., i'd be happier without using P2 cards at all. In terms of that, I thought the FS-100 was the only way around but now you guys seem to have made it clear that I can

A. use DV Rack and a PC laptop

or

B. use FCP with a MacBook Pro

or

C. though I might have misread, use a Belkin hub and a FireWire drive

Plenty of better, cheaper options for me.

Thanks !

I think that I misread your post. I do go from the camera to a hard drive
through the hub but I'm copying from the P2 card. I think that without
the P2 card you'll need another method. Good luck.
