Silly commercial from this weekend

Good music & audio. Actress is attractive enough and convincing enough. But, for my ear she speaks too quickly. Nice jib/crane shot.

The plot device of the film crew's feigned incompetence which prompts the actress' injury which leads to her being badaged, bitter, angry and sarcastic may not well serve the client's needs. "Yeah, that Ink Spot place with the angry bandaged woman, THAT'S where I want to get MY printing done!"

Not.

Also, I kinda think using the technical aspects of creating a sales/marketing campaign or the behind the scenes aspects of producing the commercial (even in jest) is a bit self indulgent. If you do it at all there should be a realllly good reason...one which helps stroke the client's ego, his business appearance, reputation or his business volume.

Technical - A
Casting - A-
Story - C

What is GREAT is that you broke your camera's "professional cherry!" LOL
Now, the pressure is removed. Good for you!

Cheers!

The disclaimer at the end, "Printing since 1980, Video production since, 2005, scratch, nevermind, we'll stick to the printing business" caught my eye as your company (presuming you are also the proprietor of a sign shop and did this video 'in house') as being a fun place to get the job done. What many/most fail to realize going into our industry is most people don't necessarily remember the quality of your work more so than are you enjoyable to be around. If the work is good enough and the person is fun to hang around, or presents an image of 'cool', the they're more likely to have work. I mean, look at Jarred Land. He's a frigging party animal! I'll put it this way: I would order services from your shop if in the area and you weren't too expensive. This ad interests me in that way, all technical and storytelling issues aside, it is effective at being cute and funny and convincing me that your employees are not stiffs. The ad conveys a cool vender who I would definitely consider ordering from. My two cents.

francheezie,

I didn't think it be this silly! I love it, its so funny. I was dying laughing at the opening scene. I notice the audio is very good. What kind of mic(s)(name/type) did u guys use?
great job btw, its simple and very likeable.

Definitely nice concept. Definitely funny. Should be one of those "hey did you see the Such-n-Such Commercial?" commercials. The music ensures that the feel is "hey the people are fun and want to entertain us." vs. "these people are bitter or incompetent".

Two script / editing notes:
The take should cut after the director yells "Cut! Cut!" We get it. Hitting the camera, the girl looking confused and irritated and the director yelling is an effective punch line and ALL that is NECESSARY to get and understand the gag. The line "Is the camera OK?" is an energy downer, a P.S. to the true punch line, that lets your audience get ahead of you (a bad thing). A beat or two after “cut cut”, and you should be ahead of us again with the music and repeat of the crane shot.

Similarly. I think it would be funnier if, when the girl removes the camera lens, she just gives the camera operator that smoldering look and walks off frame shaking her head. Again, we get it as soon as she pulls the cap off and we see the look on her face --- again, the dialogue is lower in impact and energy (down note) than her just playing "pissed".

One shot note:
Also, there was a too much headroom in the shot where she wakes up the director.

Just my opinions. I think it is good, solid, and really fun work as a whole.

Hudson, that's weird that it's coming up as a Real Player file. I exported it as an .mp4 through Compressor. Should I re-rip it as a .mov? I want to make sure as many peole as possible can view it.

thisiswells, thanks for the feedback. You hit it right on the head, exactly what we were going for.

hiro, we used a couple of wireless lavs, i'll have to get the name of them from my sound guy.

jdanstan, i'm kicking myself now for not having a take with no dialogue with the lens cap. the music definitely tips the fact that they're not idiots, just trying to entertain.

Thanks everybody for checking it out.

Watched the spot. Really funny. Just one problem that I see. It's 1min 16 secs. Not sure what cable outlet or TV station will accept it. Spots are usually 30sec or 60sec.

Thinking the same thing...

...then thought Hmmm...why not break it up and do multiple spots like a series.

Do it well enough and people will sit around waiting for the next installment. ;)
