Hmm - no replies!

I think this little test shows some challenges of the 5d, look of the lenses, intercut with another camera, a monster focus pull, lack of a rolling shutter issue (or not) etc possibly worthy of comment

Im looking for critism on cutting angles etc

this got me wondering - is vimeo too painful to watch ? - maybe one cant even see a decent focus pull !

-am I posting in the wrong place for a crit?

-is there a better hosting solution than Vimeo?

It looks absolutely wonderful. The way all pro films look, subject is sharp, in perfect focus. No in and out focusing crap. If you look at movies and tv series today this is the way they are shot. Color looks pretty nice to me. Excellent job.

TA

I am indeed working on being able to operate the camera to a standard that is what I would call

'getting the basics right'

rather than hiding incompetence behind indy, art, cloverfield or MTV looks - "in and out focusing crap"

Im trying for..

-No shaky camera and sustain of reasonable focus on a dynamic tightly framed subject

-An edit that does not jar/confuse the viewer with jump cuts, line crossing etc

I can move onto more challenging content/story when those missions are sorted

You are on the right path. This piece looks like the real thing. Steady, well focused and nicely framed and exposed. The editing is very good. Keep up the good work.

Looks nice, the only thing that caught my eye is a bad edit at 1:12. As you transition into that shot of the foot, the camera is moving roughly up to the position you want. Hold the previous shot longer, and transition once the foot shot is stable. And just a matter of taste, the whip pan transition at 1:30 seems out of place, everything about the piece (music, mood, performance) says smooth and powerful.

Your last shot is perfect.

Thanks for a good look

I think the whip pans are probably not appropriate to the piece

I am still learning and experimenting

The whips give an option for an interesting cut and show the beauty of the miller head - but the viewer does not care about that stuff

I should have left them 'on the floor'

Obviously the whole situation is a bit silly (especially the opener), the initial transition to the shed was really for me to test my ability to tell a story of something going from A-B using the steadicam, panning and pulling skills I want up my sleeve - it will probably be cut from her 'skills reel'

I am glad you mentioned the "silly parts" in the intro. Overall it was very good. I can see how you were thinking about the camera as you filmed the piece.

I think one killer shot to get would be to position the camera at the top of the silk somehow, with a wide lens pointing straight down as the model twirled around the silk. This way the camera would rotate in time with the model, perhaps adding some cool background motion.

The editing was good. Some of the lighting was a tad harsh, but overall a great little piece of film making...
