Silent Portable Generator - Anyone use one? Link to one I want to buy...Help.

Looks like a Honda rip off. You're still going to have to place the generator a pretty good distance away from where you're shooting to cancel out any noise it produces. It's not technically silent, it's rated at 63db which is about as loud as a conversation. You can also build a noise trap box that would probably do the trick. For $300, why not, give it a shot. It says it comes with a 3 month warranty so put it to the test and see how it performs.

One thing you should definitely ask the manufacturer is at what distance is the 63dba measured at? Many generator manufacturers play games with the noise level by measuring it at a distance. Normal distance for noise ratings is 1 meter or 3 feet. The point is that sound level decreases by the inverse square rule, so ratings measured at 21 or 50 feet do not give accurate understanding before you buy.

55 db is normally considered about library level and that's about where you will need to be (or lower) to make it sound quiet. If you still get background generator sound from your mic you'll have to move the gen farther away, but just remember that 100 ft is close to the limit on line losses for 12 gage wire and over that you'll need to go with 10 gage.

Also when you set up the scene make sure to place all shots opposite the direction the generator will be in, and don't forget to use the tighest pattern shotgun mic(s) you can pointed away from the generator.

As the other poster said you could build a box but only make it 5 sides and point the open end away from your shooting. Give at least a foot clearance all around the generator to prevent starving it of air.

Another trick you can do, is to mic the fire and let that fire sound mask any residual noise from the gen.

Happy trails!

And keep in mind that the difference between 55 and 63 is not a case of 63 being some 20% louder, it's actually more like 133% louder. In audio, 6dB represents a doubling of volume, so 61db is 100% louder than 55 dB.
